We are in the middle of summer, time for good resolutions. Before we realize how little we are able to use our willpower as a machine to fulfill our resolutions for the year, before all that, it is better that we start putting on our running shoes.

Starting a healthy life in which, in addition to improving our diet, we propose to do physical exercise is one of the most recurrent resolutions after the vacations. The bad thing is that it is also one of the first to fall . We think very very hard, we say to ourselves that this year yes, but we let our own excuses catch up with us and we leave it for a better occasion. It's too hot, it's raining today, I don't have time, I'm crazy all day and I can't find the time, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc. There are a thousand and one excuses that we find for not starting.

Running does not admit too many excuses

Running is one of the activities that doesn't allow too many excuses. You don't have to sign up anywhere, you can run wherever you want and whenever you want, there are no schedules and it's FREE, as we love that word. All you need is a pair of running shoes suited to your stride and your running style, and the desire to run. That's all. Of course, you will find many excuses if you want to wear them, but they are easily removable.

Reasons why running can become your best ally

Today I propose to give you a series of reasons why running can become your best ally when it comes to lead that healthy, healthy and active life that you want but do not end up hooked.

In general, any age is a good age to start practicing sport. The benefits are demonstrable and the scientific evidence in its favor is overwhelming. Age should never be an excuse. The only limitation is given by our state of health. If this is adequate there will be no problem. Even if there is a problem, a properly planned physical activity can become a basic weapon to control many diseases. The benefits of starting to practice sport will last a lifetime and will be physical, psychological and social.

With the help of Doctor and runner Rafael Hervás I present some of the benefits that you will obtain if you overcome excuses and laziness and get going.

  • Cardiovascular: decrease in heart rate and effective control of blood pressure. Adequate control of the alterations that occur in the lipid profile and a great help to quit smoking. All this, with proper weight control, contributes to reducing cardiovascular risk, especially that associated with age.
  • Osteomuscular: against osteoporosis, physical activity of load (and running is) is the most important stimulus for the formation of new bone. Fracture rates are reduced by up to 50%. It is also recommended to exercise strength, thus gaining muscle mass and increasing flexibility.
  • Weight and body composition: physical activity helps to keep weight and body fat percentage within adequate values. This is fundamental since overweight and obesity are risk factors for the appearance of hypertension, diabetes and even some types of cancer.
  • Endocrine: proper training and effective weight control help to reduce insulin resistance and thus reduce the risk of diabetes.
  • Genitourinary: although it may seem otherwise, specific pelvic floor exercises after running can prevent and mitigate urinary incontinence.
  • Psychological: the feeling of well-being and increased energy produced by the practice of physical exercise helps to improve mood, sleep disturbances and some cognitive problems. It is also a very important help to control stress. Setting new challenges and achieving new goals is a powerful positive stimulus.
  • Social: practicing physical activity in a group, either through informal groups or group classes is a great help to establish new social relationships. The possibility of running races in places other than your usual place of residence is also an extraordinary stimulus.

As you can see, there is no shortage of reasons to take up the healthy sport of running . Now you just have to overcome your own excuses and give it a try. Or take up running again if you were already running and life has taken you in a different direction. Remembering how good you felt when you completed good workouts or when you went jogging with your friends can be a good incentive. What are you waiting for?
