It's no secret that running is addictive. That's why, as we all know, once you get the bug, just as the desire to go running grows, so do the goals we had when we started running increase, or at least change. For this reason, and after having some experience in this world you may have asked yourself something similar to what happens if I go out to run more than 15 kilometers every day?
The truth is that before putting on our running Running shoes, one of the questions that we runners usually discuss with ourselves is the route we are going to run and the distance we are going to complete, so without further delay we will answer the question we launched in the previous paragraph.
What happens if I run more than 15 kilometers a day?
Regarding today's question, Iker Muñoz, RUNNEA's sports director, assures us that "if we always do the same volume - measured in kilometers - at the same intensity, we will stagnate. Repeating the same work will not make us improve. In addition, this volume can sometimes be excessive if it does not respond to a specific need.
Therefore, it seems clear that it is not advisable to run this distance for many days in a row. Moreover, it could be said that not everyone can, for various reasons, run more than 15 kilometers daily, since coping with such a volume of kilometers may not even be entirely beneficial. "Taking on a volume of more than 100 kilometers a week in popular runners can be counterproductive if they are not used to training that much. An abrupt increase in the volume of work to reach this figure can lead to injuries," says Iker Muñoz.
In addition, our sports director states that the most recurrent injuries in this type of circumstance range from the most typical ones such as
from the most typical ones, such as overloads, to stress ruptures, caused by a large number of impacts derived from the race.
But just as this practice has drawbacks, it also has its advantages. "By means of a relatively high mileage for a popular runner, a consistent aerobic base can be ensured. Although it is true that this must go hand in hand with a low-moderate work intensity, otherwise this workload could not be met," says Iker Muñoz.
When is it a good idea to run more than 15 kilometers a day?
As is obvious, and as many of you know, the preparation for a marathon is not the same as for a 10k race, so "depending on the distance we are preparing, this volume will be necessary or excessive. For example, if we are preparing for a 10k, it will not be very frequent to exceed 70 km per week. Therefore, of the 15 km per day, we will have some left over," says our sports director.
What seems undeniable is that there are many variables that we should consider before answering this question categorically. "This question is difficult to answer because it will depend on the objective we have. As a general rule, and based on a typical popular runner, this volume may be excessive if our objective, level or experience is not adequate for this large mileage. Therefore, this question will have to be answered with a big depends," he concludes.
