You know that moment when you put on a new shoe and everything fits? The fit, the smoothness of the tread, that feeling of wanting to go out and try them at that very moment. Well, after having been able to try a good number of models so far this year, I already have my first clear favorites. And no, it hasn't been easy. 2024 has been a year in which there may not have been any big surprises in running shoes launches, but we have seen new cushioning foams, new levels of responsiveness and comfort. And lots and lots of carbon plate.
Today I bring you my 5 favorite asphalt running shoes of 2024, but I hope they will help you to make a decision if you are in doubt between several models. If you're looking for a new companion for your workouts or competitions, believe me, these options will not leave you indifferent. Fast, cushioned, versatile, but they all have one thing in common: they are very good running shoes.
1. Adidas Boston 12: versatility in its purest form.
If there is a shoe that has surprised me and that has improved more than noticeably compared to the previous version is the Adidas Boston 12. Why? Because it's one of those shoes that you can use for virtually any type of training. They are fast, but don't sacrifice comfort over long distances. The combination of cushioning and responsiveness makes the Boston 12 perfect for days of long runs or series.
The fit is comfortable, the outsole has impeccable grip and the midsole with Lightstrike Pro foam gives you that extra energy in every stride without being overly stiff. For me, the Boston 12 is that wildcard that you can use for almost any occasion and you always know it will deliver.
Nike Pegasus 41: the safe bet for every day.
If there's one thing I love about the Nike Pegasus 41, it's that it's like that lifelong friend: always reliable and ready for anything. With the Pegasus 41, Nike has come up with a shoe that offers comfort and stability, and all at a price that makes them very affordable. What I like the most is that they are super versatile: you can use them both for a gentle run and for a more demanding run.
The upper fits the foot comfortably and without being restrictive, while the React foam in the midsole offers durable cushioning. It's a shoe I would recommend without hesitation to any runner looking for an everyday training shoe with a good balance of performance and price.
3. New Balance Supercomp Elite v4: speed and cushioning at its best
If you're looking for a shoe that will make you fly, the New Balance Supercomp Elite v4 is definitely the option to consider. What I liked most about them is that perfect blend of speed and comfort. They have a carbon plate that propels you through every step, but without sacrificing softness and cushioning.
These shoes are designed for racing or demanding workouts. The FuelCell foam combined with the plate makes you feel like you can maintain fast paces for miles and miles. If you have a race in mind, these Supercomp Elite v4 are a winning bet to fly off the starting line.
For me, the best carbon plate shoe of the year next to the Nike Alphafly 3
4. Asics Novablast 4: versatility without a plate.
The Asics Novablast 4 is that shoe that makes you feel light and fast without a carbon plate. It's amazing what Asics has improved with this new version. What I loved the most is its dynamic cushioning and how, despite being super cushioned, they don't lose an ounce of lightness.
They are perfect for those who are looking for a versatile shoe for all types of workouts. Whether you're on a long run or doing a series, the Novablast 4 responds smoothly. The FlyteFoam Blast+ ECO foam is soft and bouncy with every step, making the running feel very fluid and pleasant. If you want a fast and comfortable shoe, but without a plate, this is the shoe for you.
5. Mizuno Wave Sky 8: softness in every kilometer
The Mizuno Wave Sky 8 is the shoe I choose when I want to put in the miles without thinking about anything but enjoying the run. They are the most cushioned on my list, perfect for easy days out or long runs at a gentle pace. The soft feeling provided by the midsole with Mizuno Enerzy technology is something that stands out from the first kilometer.
If what you are looking for is a shoe to enjoy the race without rushing, the Wave Sky 8 is the perfect choice. It's one of those shoes that wraps your foot in comfort and makes you feel like you can keep running for hours. Ideal for runners who prioritize cushioning and comfort over speed.
It remains to be seen what is to come in these last months of the year.... I'm really looking forward to trying the Brooks Ghost Max 2 or if we'll see a new Hoka Clifton 10. We'll tell you all about it in RUNNEA.
