Today at RUNNEA we are back with a high level comparison. And in the following lines we will tell you in detail the differences, strengths and main features of two of the new running shoes models from Nike. But not just any models, no, we speak, in fact, of two shoes that fit into the Pegasus line, the running range par excellence of the American company, one of the most long-lived and, above all, sold throughout history. Let's go!

As we said, within the Nike running shoes catalog, the Pegasus line has been a reference for decades. On this occasion, we will compare two of the most recent models: the Nike Pegasus 41 and the Nike Pegasus Plus. Because, although both running shoes belong to the same family, they are designed for different types of runners and each has specific features.

Therefore, throughout this analysis, we will see their similarities, differences and other ins and outs so that you can understand which shoe is ideal for you, depending on your goals. We'll focus on key aspects that will help you choose the right model for your running style and needs. But first, let's get some context!

History of the Nike Pegasus line

The Nike Pegasus line debuted in 1982 with a key innovation: the incorporation of Nike Air technology only in the heel, focusing on cushioning runners' impact in that area, rather than spanning the entire sole like previous models. This, along with a waffle-style sole and new foam, quickly made the Pegasus a runner's favorite, reaching sales of more than 300,000 units in its first six months of life.

The combination of performance, affordability and comfort cemented them as a hit in the community. However, in the 1990s, some revamp attempts were not well received, leading Nike to temporarily withdraw the Pegasus from the market. However, at the end of that decade, the Pegasus made a strong comeback, keeping its original spirit but adapting to the new technologies and needs of modern running.

Starting in the year 2000, the Pegasus was once again a resounding success, generating nearly $19 million in sales. With the introduction of Zoom Air in 2010, and later a full Zoom Air unit in the 35th edition, the line continued to evolve and improve its performance to this day. Thus, today, the Pegasus has become the best-selling family of shoes in history. And, of course, among them are the protagonists of today's comparison, Pegasus 41 and Pegasus Plus.

Outstanding features, similarities and differences

Upper

Both the Nike Pegasus 41 and Nike Pegasus Plus have a focus on comfort and secure fit. The Pegasus 41 features a breathable Engineered Mesh upper designed to offer ventilation over long distances, ideal for runs in the heat or extended sessions. In contrast, the Pegasus Plus features a Flyknit upper, which, while offering a comfortable fit, is not as breathable as the Pegasus 41 shoe. This difference can be crucial for runners who prioritize the ventilation of the model, but without a doubt, a differential detail in the weight.

Midsole

The most notable difference between the two shoes is in the midsole. The Pegasus 41 incorporates ReactX foam with a balanced design between cushioning and response. This makes it an ideal shoe for daily training sessions, with fast paces but great comfort.

The Pegasus Plus uses a lighter, softer, full-length ZoomX midsole. This foam generates a softer and more dynamic running feel, but with less structure and weight, making it more suitable for short distances or recovery sessions.

Outsole

As for the outsole, both models feature high-strength rubber, designed to offer good traction on varied surfaces. However, the Pegasus Plus shows some weakness in its long-term durability compared to the ruggedness of the Pegasus 41, especially on prolonged workouts or abrasive terrain.

For those looking for durability in more intense workouts, the Pegasus 41 might have a slight advantage, as the Pegasus Plus comes to the market with a slightly more "racer" philosophy that reserves it for more special runs and not so much for daily workouts.

Weight and drop

As far as technical specifications are concerned, the Pegasus 41 has an approximate weight of 297 grams in the men's version and 251 in the women's version, being a little heavier than the Pegasus Plus, which weighs around 245 grams in its men's version and an incredible 205 grams in the women's version.

On the other hand, the drop is the same for both shoes, 10 millimeters, which makes them suitable for a natural transition in the stride cycle. However, we have to clarify that in this sense, the lightness of the Pegasus Plus could provide some advantage in higher pace races.

Aesthetics and design

Some of the key differences between the two models lie in the design approach. The Pegasus 41 is a more versatile and multi-purpose shoe, born to support multiple types of training, as is recognizable in other predecessor models in the traditional range, thanks to its combination of durability and balanced cushioning.

Meanwhile, the Pegasus Plus offers a softer and lighter experience, but with less structure, making it a better choice for shorter runs or recovery sessions. However, the latter, due to that lighter design and structure, requires better running technique to get the full potential out of it.

Price

Another key difference in this comparison is undoubtedly the retail price. While it is true that in the RUNNEA comparator you can find both models at the best price on the market, the official retail price rises considerably in the case of the Pegasus Plus. With a price close to 180€, compared to 140€ for the Pegasus 41, it is a more expensive and sophisticated model. A price difference that reflects the lighter design and higher performance foam used in the Pegasus Plus.

Ideal runner profile and recommended uses

Nike Pegasus 41

Overall, the Nike Pegasus 41 is ideal for runners looking for a reliable everyday shoe. Thanks to its balanced design and durable cushioning, it is perfect for medium to long distance training, as well as for those looking for stability and endurance on all types of surfaces. A shoe for light-medium weight runners up to 85 kilos running 4:30 m/km or less.

Nike Pegasus Plus

On the other hand, the Nike Pegasus Plus is aimed at runners who prefer a lighter, faster and softer shoe, focused on shorter distances or recovery workouts. The great reactivity of its full-length ZoomX foam makes it ideal for light runs and runners from beginners looking for comfort and support, to experienced athletes. Preferably runners with a neutral stride and intermediate weights up to 80 kilos.

Which shoe to choose? Pegasus 41 vs Pegasus Plus

In short, if you are looking for a versatile, durable shoe suitable for all types of training, the Nike Pegasus 41 is the most suitable option. And we are talking about a shoe that withstands tough workouts and offers excellent value for money, as it has been doing since its first edition, back in 1982.

However, if you want to go a step further and prioritize lightness and softness by preferring a shoe for more relaxed workouts or lower mileage, but slightly faster runs, the Nike Pegasus Plus might be your best choice. Which one suits your running style best? It all depends on your goals and personal preferences.
