In the world of running, where every detail counts, choosing the right shoe can be the key between beating your personal best or falling short, between enjoying your training or suffering. That's why choosing your running shoes well is so important. At first glance, maximum cushioning shoes may all look the same due to the wide midsole that offers good rebound to protect our joints, but they are actually quite different. At RUNNEA we are going to analyse and compare five road running giants: ASICS Nimbus 25, Brooks Glycerin 20, New Balance 1080 v12, Nike Invincible 3 and adidas Ultraboost Light. These 5 are the most popular models in RUNNEA's cushioned running shoes section. Although they may seem like twin sisters, each one hides secrets and features that make them unique. ASICS Gel Nimbus 25

One of the most outstanding surprises of 2023. A shoe that undergoes a radical change in its design and reduces for the first time its GEL technology to move to Pure GEL. ASICS' goal is to seek maximum comfort and softness while running. A shoe with a very soft touch, for runners of any weight but in our opinion not for all types of runners...

Innovation in cushioning: Although the traditional GEL system has not been eliminated, PureGEL, a new EVA foam located in the heel area, has been incorporated. This foam works together with Flyte Foam Blast ECO+ foam in the forefoot, providing lighter, softer and more responsive cushioning. It also has the added benefit of being more environmentally friendly.

Technical details: The shoes weigh 289 g for men (size 9 US, 8 UK) and 227 g for women (size 7.5 US, 5.5 UK). They have an 8 mm drop, measuring 41.5 mm in the heel and 33.5 mm in the forefoot. The midsole is composed of full-length Flytefoam Blast ECO+ (20% recycled) and PureGEL in the heel area.

Design and aesthetics: The Nimbus 25 have been redesigned to offer an improved running experience. Their design is more groundbreaking, and draws inspiration from the ASICS Metaspeed Sky super shoes. The midsole is more prominent, especially in the heel, and has a more aerodynamic shape to provide a more reactive feel while running.

Upper and support: The upper has been completely redesigned to fit the foot better. It is made with an engineered mesh, and up to 75% of the main material is recycled. In addition, the Nimbus 25 include an elastic strap that makes it easier to put the shoes on and improves support.

Outsole: The outsoleof the Nimbus 25 uses AHAR rubber compound, which is known to improve the shoe's grip and durability.

Type of runner: These shoes are ideal for neutral-gait runners. And despite the fact that the last is now wider in search of greater stability, it is perhaps too soft and it may not be stable enough for heavy runners over 90 kg without an efficient running technique.

Paces and distances: The ASICS Gel Nimbus 25 are versatile in terms of paces and distances. They are suitable for paces slower than 4:30 min/km, depending on the runner's weight, and are ideal for long distances, including marathons.

Conclusions

  • The best: The shoe's adaptability and comfort, ideal for long distances.
  • Who it's for: Neutral-gait runners looking for maximum softness and comfort in their workouts and races at light paces.
  • Differentiator: Its TRUSSTIC™ SYSTEM technology improves stability, something not all shoes in its category offer.
  • We love: The combination of comfort and smoothness.
  • Room for improvement: It gains in softness and comfort but has lost some stability compared to the previous version. Its softness may not be the best solution for heavier runners who tend to overpronate over time.

Brooks Glycerin 20

The Brooks Glycerin 20 is one of the most popular and trusted shoes for runners looking for cushioning, support and durability. Its feel is not as soft or squishy as you might find in Nimbus 25 or the 1080 v12, for example, but it is more stable and more durable.

DNA LOFT midsole: This is the heart of the Glycerin 20. The DNA LOFT midsole provides soft, plush cushioning with no loss in responsiveness or durability. This combination ensures that every step is comfortable and efficient.

Technical mesh upper: Designed to be breathable and adaptable, the upper of the Glycerin 20 adapts to the foot perfectly, offering support and flexibility where it is needed most.

Outsole: With a design optimised for traction and durability, the outsoleof the Glycerin 20 ensures a secure grip on a variety of surfaces.

Type of runner: These shoes are ideal for neutral-gait runners who are looking for a protected running experience with some dynamism. They are perfect for long distances and daily training on asphalt at medium to slow paces.

RUNNEA user reviews: RUNNEA runners have praised the comfort, durability and stability of these shoes.

Conclusions

  • The best: Adaptability to different types of terrain and good foot protection.
  • Who it's for: Ideal for runners looking for a versatile shoe for different surfaces.
  • Differentiator: 3D Fit Print mesh offers a personalised fit.
  • We love: Versatility, foot support and adaptability.
  • Room for improvement: Its design could be more modern.

New Balance Fresh FoamX 1080 v12

The New Balance 1080 v12 combines the best of technology and design to achieve a shoe with maximum cushioning, comfort and dynamics. With its Fresh Foam X cushioning, it offers a very comfortable running experience and is the fastest of the 5 shoes we compared. Its technical Hypoknit mesh adapts to the movement, while its modern design makes it a perfect choice for both running and everyday use.

Fresh FoamX midsole: This is the key to the 1080 v12. The evolved Fresh FoamX compound provides improved rebound capacity, which translates into greater energy return compared to previous versions. All of this without losing comfort while running.

Upper with Hypoknit technical fabric: It ensures a perfect fit like a glove, and also favours better aerodynamics in every kilometre.

Outsole: Although the tread is similar to the previous version, this version features a more flexible design with additional grooves in the forefoot area.

This model is ideal for neutral-gait runners looking for maximum cushioning but also a responsive shoe when needed. They are perfect for road running and offer a high level of comfort and optimal energy return with every stride.

RUNNEA user reviews: Users have rated the lightness, cushioning, flexibility, responsiveness, stability and grip of these shoes positively.

Conclusions

  • The best: Lightweight without compromising cushioning.
  • Who it's for: Runners looking for a lightweight shoe with good cushioning.
  • Differentiator: Modern and attractive design.
  • We love: The combination of design, lightness, cushioning and speed.
  • Room for improvement : Possibly the point of improvement is the durability.

Nike Invincible 3

Nike has always been an innovative brand in the running world, and the Nike Invincible 3 ZoomX Invincible Run Flyknit are a clear example of how to revolutionise the concept of cushioned running shoes. These shoes are designed to offer a unique combination of cushioning, response and lightness with a design that is totally different from the competition.

ZoomX midsole: This is the star feature of the Invincible Run Flyknit 3. The ZoomX midsole is known for its responsiveness and lightness, offering a unique running feel. In previous versions, this foam offered some instability for heavier runners. In this third edition, the shoes are more stable and therefore more secure.

Flyknit upper: The Flyknit fabric is lightweight, breathable and adapts perfectly to the foot, creating a second-skin feel.

Outsole: With a wide and stable design, the outsoleof these shoes provides excellent traction and durability. Possibly the most durable of the 5, along with the Adidas Ultraboost Light.

These shoes are ideal for runners looking for a combination of cushioning and responsiveness. They are perfect for a wide variety of workouts, but mainly long runs at slow to medium paces. The outsole allows them to be suitable for both asphalt and dirt tracks.

RUNNEA user reviews: Runners have praised the lightness, responsiveness and comfort of these shoes. However, some have mentioned that the price may be a bit high.

Conclusions

  • Features: With ZoomX foam, it provides great responsiveness and lightness.
  • The best: Its Flyknit design that guarantees a perfect fit.
  • Who it's for: Runners looking for a lot of cushioning and protection whithout sacrificing responsiveness.
  • Differentiator: Responsiveness and energy in every stride.
  • We love: The feeling of running in a very cushioned but responsive shoe.
  • Room for improvement: The price may be a bit high.

Adidas Ultraboost Light 23

Adidas has been a leading brand in the running world for many years when it comes to cushioned shoes. But the adidas Ultraboost 22 was perhaps a turning point for the German brand. Recreational runners did not like its excessive weight, especially when comparing the model to its much lighter competitors. That's why it needed a change and they have found it with the Adidas Ultraboost Light 23. These shoes combine design, technology and performance to offer a new running experience. A firmer feel, greater protection, greater reactivity but with a much lighter weight.

Boost Light Midsole: This is the essence of Ultraboost Light 23. The new Boost Light technology provides incredibly responsive cushioning but at a lighter weight. However, its running feel is stiffer than its competitors'.

Primeknit upper: Primeknit fabric is lightweight, breathable and fits the foot like a glove, offering support and comfort with every stride.

Heel reinforcements: Designed to offer greater stability and support while running.

Streamlined design: With a modern, stylised look, these shoes are not only functional, but also attractive.

Outsole: Designed for traction and durability thanks to a partnership with Continental. The outsole of the Ultraboost Light 23 is perfect for running on various surfaces.

These shoes are ideal for runners with neutral or slight overpronation who are looking for a combination of design and performance. They are perfect for daily workouts and runs of any distance at light to medium paces.

RUNNEA user reviews: Runners have praised the comfort, design and responsiveness of these shoes. However, some have mentioned that they can feel a little tight in the midfoot area and stiff on the run.

Conclusions

  • The best: Lightweight and responsive, making every stride feel powerful and efficient.
  • Who it's for: Runners looking for a versatile shoe, suitable for both fast training and long distance races.
  • Differentiator: The combination of Boost Ultralight foam and Primeknit mesh makes it stand out in terms of comfort and performance.
  • We love: The lightweight feel without compromising cushioning or stability.
  • Room for improvement: While its design is modern, the variety of colourways might be limited for some tastes.
