It is well known that physical exercise, sport, is associated with a thousand positive aspects, recognizable and remarkable, as far as health is concerned. Without being a medicine, it is the prescription par excellence of general medicine, a healthy habit, whatever the stage we are going through. From childhood or youth, through adulthood to old age.
However, at RUNNEA we emphasize the importance of running over other types of sports because it is our "particular DNA". And we do so, because beyond feeling this sport, whether amateur or professional, as something intrinsic and natural to human beings, it involves a series of shared values of great depth, within a community, the runner, which is characterized by the culture of effort, solidarity and the breaking down of walls between communities and peoples.
A social factor that unites and does not separate. A way of looking at life, step by step, stride by stride, that allows us to explore not only our capabilities, but to discover extraordinary places, the length and breadth of the globe, at the click of a shoe. A way of understanding, sharing and celebrating in a unique way.
So, at this point, you may be wondering whether to start running, whether to keep up your training or even whether to sign up for a marathon, the ultimate challenge for any self-respecting runner. And that is where we do not want to miss the opportunity to give you strong arguments to encourage the practice of our beloved sport by participating in one of the most spectacular marathons in Europe, the EDP Porto Marathon 2023.
Don't miss the opportunity to get to know Porto with your running shoes!
5 reasons not to miss the EDP Porto Marathon 2023
As we said, the challenge of participating and successfully completing a marathon is the dream of many runners, but the choice of a race of such magnitude goes far beyond your sporting intentions or proximity to the event. From RUNNEA we have the privilege of being in close contact with the running scene and the calendar of popular races at national and international level.
Therefore, we would like to emphasize the Portuguese city of Porto and its long-lived marathon, a spectacular race that will help you exceed your own expectations while enjoying one of the most beautiful locations in Europe. And yes, we are talking directly to you, because we are going to give you the 5 reasons why you should run the EDP Porto Marathon 2023.
1. Run to visit and get to know Porto
Porto is one of the Portuguese cities with the most personality in the country. Its historical essence makes it one of the most bohemian cities in Portugal, giving it a unique aura impregnated with personality. Something that its marathon has managed to capture in a route that will take you through some of the most emblematic points of its heritage, offering a roller coaster of emotions as the kilometers go by.
From its famous Queidódromo, in the vicinity of the Parque Cidade do Porto, runners will enjoy one of the most impressive circuits in Europe, passing through its historic center, with its monuments declared World Heritage by UNESCO, or the banks of the Douro River, from where you can contemplate the majestic 6 bridges of the city, among which stand out the Luis I or Maria Pia.
In general terms, the route of this EDP Porto Marathon 2023 reflects the essence of a town with a particular essence and that will soak you in history at every step, making you part of one of the most striking and complete circuits of the international scene. And if you don't believe it, pay attention to the details of the route:
2. Run because there's a distance for you
Yes, we know, the marathon can be a scary challenge. You may not be ready to make it to November 5 with a guarantee that you'll enjoy the race while you go sightseeing in your shoe, but that's no excuse. But that's no excuse, because the EDP Porto Marathon 2023 has a distance prepared for you.
If the 42.195 kilometers seem impossible, don't worry, because the race organizers have presented up to 2 different modalities to the main distance so that all runners who want to enjoy the charm of Oporto can do it without fear of "failing" in the attempt.
The 10 and 6 kilometers races, called Family Race and Fun Race respectively, are the perfect alternatives to have no excuses. Circuits adapted to runner profiles of all types that will keep the essence of the race and the city alive, while facilitating the enjoyment and participation of runners of all ages and conditions. So it doesn't matter if you are not such an experienced runner, there is a distance for you with which to discover Oporto together with miles people in a day of joint celebration.
3. Run because you still have time
It seems obvious considering that the race will start on November 5th 2023 at 9:00 am, but yes, you still have time to participate. Registration for the race will be open until October 31 as usual, and even until the very day before the race at the EXPO fair, as long as the up to 25,000 bibs available in total have not been sold out.
But hurry up because the Marathon distance has 7,500 official bibs available, as well as the 10k distance (Family Race), while the Fun Race (6k distance) has a little more margin up to 10,000 bibs. In addition, if you are one of the most enthusiastic, you can get the VIP registration, which will give you advantages such as sub-elite bib, first line start, parking in the finish area, access to the VIP Zone, checkroom in the VIP Zone, catering in the VIP Zone, SMS results and Pasta Party.

4. Run to be part of its history
Facing its 19th edition, the EDP Porto Marathon3 is a race with an unparalleled history. The course that crosses its emblematic streets and passes under its historic bridges has been run by athletes from all over the world and who are part of the elite of both men's and women's athletics.
With records set at 02:26:58 by Monica Jepkoech in 2017 for the women's category and 02:08:47 by James Mwangui in 2022 for the men's category, we are talking about a high altitude marathon. A race that in its men's category, last edition, was highlighted by the aforementioned victoria of the Kenyan Mwangui, who also beat the record of the race, as we said, and who was followed by the Ethiopians, Abraraw Misganaw Tegegne and Haymanot Alew. Athletes who completed the podium with times of 02:10:29 and 02:11:10 respectively.
On the other hand, in the women's category, 2022 brought the victoria of Portuguese Vanessa Carvalho, who crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 02:35:24. After her, Lydia Njeri Mathathi and Lina Kiriliuk, Kenyan and Lithuanian respectively, took the second and third step of the podium, with times of 02:36:38 and 02:40:53. And now you can be engraved in the list of miles people who have managed to overcome the challenge of the beautiful city of Porto, what are you waiting for?
5. Run to enjoy all that surrounds the event
Of course, crossing the finish line is the main goal of the moment. But we encourage you not to be the only one, as the EDP Porto Marathon 2023, and the Portuguese city in general, offer much more than a high-flying course. During the days before and after the race you can enjoy a variety of events among which we highlight:
The EXPO Porto Marathon 2023:
The meeting point for the runners of the event. A place where, beyond picking up your race bib and runner's bag, you can enjoy the stands of the event sponsors, as well as enjoy the company of miles people (more than 19,000 in 2022), with your same passions, spirit and excitement. A place where you can also discover other friendly races of the Porto Marathon Running Portugal and discuss with running professionals, who will give you the best tips and introduce you to the latest innovations.
The Pasta Party:
The Pasta Party is a celebration, within the EXPO itself but requiring an additional ticket, in which the athletes will be presented and offered their own pastries originating from the area. A clear example of symbiosis between gastronomy and sports culture in which the so necessary carbohydrates are the main ingredient. It will take place on November 4, from 12:00 to 17:00 hours, and will be priced at 5 Euro for athletes and 9 Euro for companions.
Having said all this, there is no other conclusion than to encourage you to live the experience of the EDP Porto Marathon 2023. With its 3 modalities and its great socio-sporting culture, we maintain the idea with which we have been agreeing: that it is one of the most relevant, beautiful and essential events in Europe. A marathon that goes beyond the sport itself and invites you to discover a city full of charm and history by shoe. We won't miss it, what about you?
