With the arrival of October, as every year, came one of the most anticipated moments for running fans, loaded with big names in world athletics, among which stood out, above all, Ruth Chepngetich and John Korir. And we are talking about nothing more and nothing less than the brand new winners of the Chicago Marathon 2024, which held its 46th edition on October 13 from 14:30 Spanish time. A spectacle that left us with a new world record in the women's category, lowering by almost 2 minutes the previous best mark of the discipline, held by Tigst Assefa. The Kenyan Chepngetichha recorded a time of 2 hours 9 minutes and 56 seconds, being the first runner in history to go under the 2 hours and 10 minutes in the 42k distance! A historical fact that confirms Chicago as the fastest marathon in the world with the world records for women(Ruth Chepngetich - 2:09:56) and men (Kelvin Kiptum - 2:00:35).
And is that this Chicago Marathon 2024, which as you already know, already had to his credit the best world record in history in men's marathon, with the incredible time of 2:00:35 achieved by the sadly deceased Kelvin Kiptum in 2023. A runner who was honored with a minute of silence before the official start of the new edition. But, in addition, after the celebration of its new and last edition, the Chicago Marathon rises with a new world record, that of Ruth Chepngetich, with a mark of 2:09:56 that makes her the fastest marathon runner of all time, and the first to go under the 2 hours and 10 minutes. A time that beats the previous record by almost 2 minutes, set last year at the Berlin Marathon by Tigst Assefa with her 2:11:53.
After the great winner of the day, the podium in the women's category was meta by the Ethiopian Asefa Kebede, more than 7 minutes and a half behind the champion with a time of 2:17:32 and the Kenyan Irine Cheptai, who also finished in third position thanks to her time of 2:17:52. A race that will go down in history for leaving us the new world marathon record in the women's category.
Putting the spotlight on the running shoes worn by the athletes who have topped the podium, it should be noted that just 371 days after Kelvin Kiptum set the men's world record, Ruth Chepngetich has been able to honor his legacy, and also with a flyingshoe that is causing a furor among the fastest marathon runners on the planet: the Nike Alphafly 3
