Even while being in their comfort zone, one of the "challenges" to which we have subjected our RUNNEA Trail Team members so far this season has been to test a product as specific as the Fenix HM65R-T v2.0 headlamp. Something that has meant that they have changed their training routines partly. Especially because they had to go running at night or in poor visibility conditions. These were the starting requirements, and of course, none of them said no to them.
Raúl Lozano and Imanol Urrestizala were 2 of the members of the RUNNEA Trail Team who tested this top-of-the-line headlamp from Fenix Flashlights. In the next lines of this RUNNEA Magazine article we detail all their feedback on this second version of the HM65R-T.
The details you need to know about the Fenix HM65R-T v2.0 headlamp.
Before we dive into the product reviews, we give you the background on this innovative Fenix HM65R-T v2.0, which may become your favorite trail running headlamp. You know... safety first!
The first thing you need to know is that we are talking about a high-end headlamp. Why? Its performance speaks for itself:
- 1,600 lumens of power.
- It has a 3,400 mAh rechargeable battery.
- It is capable of illuminating up to 170 meters away, and with a wide beam of light that facilitates night transit through technical areas.
- Made of magnesium alloy.
- IP68 protection, the maximum possible, against water and humidity.
- Impact and shock resistance up to 2 meters.
Arguments in favor of the Fénix HM65R-T v2.0 headlamp
The most positive aspect of this "challenge" of the RUNNEA Trail Team is that not only have they responded, but they have dared to put this headlamp to the test in the demands of a major mountain race such as the VDA mode of the last edition of the Val d'Aran By UTMB 2024. An excellent testing grounds, among other tests and / or intensity training. Real conditions for a high quality product.
After testing this headlamp in detail we can conclude that both Raul and Imanol agree both in their final verdict and in their arguments in favor:
Intelligent overheating protection
The Fenix HM65R-T V2.0 makes downward changes to a lower power mode after using it for a while and the upper mode cannot be selected, which could be an argument against the product and yet in my opinion is a plus point as it gives us certain signals: it is an intelligent overheat protection, as the lamp builds up a lot of heat when used at high power levels for extended periods of time; and it is a low voltage warning, so when the voltage level drops below the level preset by the brand, the headlamp reduces the brightness level until it reaches Eco mode.
Bidirectional adjustment system
We are talking about a system that allows easy adjustment of the strap. Just thread the round clasp to tighten the cords, and to release it you simply pull out the thread and loosen the cords, without having to struggle with complicated snags. This is especially useful when you need to make quick adjustments during a race.

If there's one thing that sets this headlamp apart, it's its impressive 1,600 lumens of power. But beyond the numbers, what really matters is how that translates in the real world. The HM65R-T V2.0 Fenix features two integral spot beam and broad beam light sources:
Cool White Light (1,600 lumens): Being brighter, it is ideal for illuminating wider areas and long distances. When you're running on unfamiliar trails or need to see what's ahead clearly, this mode provides a powerful, focused beam of light that reaches up to 170 meters.
Warm white light (800 lumens): Perfect for a wide, comfortable view. This mode provides a more diffused illumination that illuminates the near environment, which is great for avoiding obstacles, as well as for running in rainy and foggy conditions. This way you have a better perception of the terrain.
The transition between the different modes is smooth and can be performed even with gloves, thanks to its intuitive buttons. And as a detail to keep in mind, you should know that there is no option to combine both modes.
Battery life
The battery life, which with the minimum intensity is up to 300 hours in Eco output mode of only 5 lumens, which is a great point in favor of this headlamp. The minimum battery life is 3 hours at maximum intensity.
In addition, the battery level indicator comes in handy to keep you informed about the remaining power. There is certainly nothing worse than running out of light in the middle of nowhere. Now you can plan your outings without worry.
Locking system
A functional system that tries to prevent accidental activation. Simply press both switches for 3 seconds. It is a detail that also contributes to efficient battery saving to ensure that you will have light when you really need it.
SOS and emergency function
And here comes something that can make the difference in critical situations: the SOS function with 600 hours of autonomy. Knowing that I can activate an emergency mode that will last for days gives me extra peace of mind on my most challenging expeditions.
Speaking of safety, an additional detail is its integrated whistle for emergencies. It gives you the opportunity to emit a loud sound can be vital to be located. This shows the attention to detail of Fenix Flashlights.
How can this Fenix HM65R-T v2.0 headlamp be improved?
In the chapter of possible improvement sections, this second version of the HM65R-T headlamp, the members of the RUNNEA Trail Team point out that, despite the dimensions being smaller than the original version (80x46.8x34.9), it is still a somewhat bulky option.
It should also be noted that, on the contrary, the weight is somewhat higher than the first model of the HM65R-TFenix: 140 grams vs 131 grams, which makes it a bit heavier.
Although its size is not a problem to store it in the pockets of the backpack, if it occupied and weighed a little less it would be an ideal front.
Running performance of the Fenix HM65R-T v2.0
We have already mentioned that the Val d'Aran By UTMB 2024 race has been the main testing ground for this new model of the HM65R-T V2.0 Fenix, proving to be an essential tool that improves performance and safety. These features have also been very present in the outings and night training sessions of Raúl Lozano and Imanol Urrestizala.
To be taken into account. Firstly, the light beam is powerful and uniform, with an exceptional range and wide coverage. Secondly, they have also noted that running in heavy rain and on dusty trails, the headlamp has never failed.
And third, the adjustment system keeps the headlamp firmly in place, without causing discomfort or pressure points. Even on technical terrain. The headlamp doesn't move, nor does it become a distraction.
Is the HM65R-T V2.0 Fenix the ultimate headlamp?
After extensive testing, Imanol and Raul say it is:
The HM65R-T V2.0 Fenix is an exceptional headlamp that more than delivers on power, durability and comfort. Its versatility makes it ideal not only for trail runners, but also for hikers, campers and any outdoors enthusiast who require reliable illumination.
Plus, its value for money is another big plus. Getting so many features and performance at an affordable price is definitely an advantage that should not be overlooked.
If you're looking for a headlamp to match your adventures and give you the confidence to explore further afield, the members of the RUNNEA Trail Team recommend the HM65R-T V2.0Fenix: for safety and performance, it's well worth the investment.
