With that popular saying that "Spring, the blood changes", once again, Polar surprises us again with the launch of its new family of high-end GPS heart rate monitors & sports watches Polar Pacer Series, which comes with two luxury members: Polar Pacer and Polar Pacer Pro. The clues are more than clear: the first, Pacer, a training device with everything the beginner runner needs; and the second, the Pacer Pro, which offers more advanced features for the most demanding runners who want to improve their sports performance. RUNNEA's editorial team will give you a breakdown of the most relevant details of both heart rate monitors & sports watches, designed specifically for runners.

Among the 2022 novelties that the Finnish brand has presented in society, let's say that the Polar Pacer Pro is the big brother, and the top of the range model of this innovative Polar Pacer Series. A new range of GPS heart rate monitors & sports watches that come to offer the most advanced training, recovery and rest functions, including sleep, for runners of all types and conditions.

The first thing to note about the Polar Racer Pro is that, before its official launch, this device has already become the official sports watch of the Zurich Marató Barcelona 2022, which takes place on May 8. A note that highlights the high performance that brings with it the Pacer Pro. The purpose that Polar seeks is that the most demanding athlete finds in this Polar Pacer Pro the perfect ally to optimize each training session, which will lead him to exceed his sporting goals however high they may be.

What are the most relevant sections of this Polar Pacer Pro?

After the resounding success that the Nordic brand has achieved with multisport watches Polar Vantage Series with its models Polar Vantage V2 and Polar Vantage M2, the latest from Polar is designed and intended for lovers of running, In the specific case of Polar Pacer Pro, this GPS watch has been designed to compete head-to-head with the successful Garmin Forerunner series, for example. This Pacer Pro has as its main argument in favor that it is one of the most competitive running watches on the market today. Its lighter and more elegant design is obvious, but what is not seen of this device is also worth considering, its high-speed processor. In this way, the Polar Pacer Pro is able to provide the runner with the most advanced training functions with the clear objective of improving their running efficiency, and therefore also their sports performance.

One of the main novelties of this PolarPacer Pro is the integrated antenna, of new construction, which allows the GPS signal to be more accurate. In addition, this technological detail does not compromise at all the autonomy of its battery, whose duration is outstanding: up to 100 hours of training, being a total of 35 hours with GPS mode activated and heart rate monitoring at maximum accuracy.

As already seen in the high-end version of outdoor watches, such as the Polar Grit X Pro, this new edition of the Polar Pacer Pro also integrates Komoot technology, which allows the runner to keep his roadmap without any loss, and even reach the initial starting point without any problem, thanks to its Back to Start function.

In addition, in terms of design, this Polar Pacer Pro leaves no detail to chance, no matter how small, and is designed specifically for the runner. Not only its ergonomic buttons with a rough surface to ensure good contact, but also the level of comfort it offers with its aluminum bezel and completely flat back for a perfect fit to the wrist. Wear it 24 hours a day without any discomfort!

But this Polar Pacer Pro will not have any obstacle to slow down the runner's race, because it incorporates an ultra-thin Gorilla Glass 3.0 lens, ensuring strength and durability; but also a color display, high resolution and offers a gradual contrast to the visibility conditions.

Specific features of Polar Pacer Pro

Being the top of the range version of the Polar Pacer series, this latest generation GPS sports watch Polar Pacer Pro includes, as standard, all the features of its little brother the Polar Pacer. Among many others, the most outstanding are:

  • Polar Precision Prime: evolved sensor with 10 LED lights to ensure more accurate heart rate monitoring; phased training; performance and recovery tests (Running Test, Cycling Test and Walking Test).
  • Phased training: The user can plan a wide variety of workouts based on the following.
  • FuelWise: Alerts and food reminders for the runner to consider the appropriate intake of fluids and food according to the effort made. But also the Energy Source function to monitor energy expenditure at all times, in addition to dividing the consumption of that energy in proteins, fats and carbohydrates.
  • Multisport profile with up to 130 sports disciplines, including swimming metrics (pool and open water) and triathlon metrics to record all competition transitions.

Not forgetting the essential running functions (distance, time, pace, etc.). As well as those smart watches functions with smart notifications and allowing the user to be permanently connected to their environment.

Of course, the leap in quality of this premium training device lies in some of its more specific functions, which we summarize in:

Running power from the wrist: records, in real time, the watts generated in each stride, but also optimizes the control of the power zones to run at the necessary intensity, and thus promote better performance in each race.

Hill Splitter: Another of the functions inherited from the exclusive Polar Grit X Pro outdoor watch, and through which to record each ascent and descent, detecting the ups and downs, automatically. This considers the data of speed, altitude and distance, and thus controlled each slope that the runner is on the way.

Integrated barometer: option that ensures a more accurate measurement of altimetry, while indicating the calculation of running power in watts, and from the wrist. In this way, the runner has a detailed control of the effort, and thus will train at the right intensity.

SHIFT: innovative adapter that allows the user to exchange standard 20mm straps easily, adapting the watch to the style required at any time.

Recently arrived on the running market, RUNNEA has had the opportunity to test the new Polar Pacer Pro and all its features, which are not few! We have no doubt that this heart rate monitor will become one of the great favorites for the 2022 season. If you want to know all the news of this top of the range you will not want to miss the review of our tester, read on!

What we liked most about the Polar Pacer Pro

Very long battery life

If I were to say that what I liked most about a heart rate monitor is its battery life, perhaps I would be underestimating the many options presented to us by this type of device. But I do want to start with this point because I have had the good fortune to know the Polar range in recent years and I have to say that it is a virtue in almost all its models. According to Polars official website the battery lasts 100 hours in power saving mode and 35 hours in training mode and with GPS activated. We have not had the heart rate monitor long enough to check if these records are but I have to tell you that recharging the battery will not be one of your problems.

Quality / price ratio

This Polar Pacer Pro is distinguished by the fundamental quality / price ratio that we look for in everything we buy. For me this heart rate monitor meets with an outstanding in that aspect.

This model does not reach 300 and its most basic version Polar Pacer is under 200. By the way, mention that the main difference between the two models is in the barometer. Polar has always been characterized by seeking a good balance in the economy, and here, they have fulfilled. In this Polar Pacer Pro you can find everything you ask a heart rate monitor for 90% of runners. It is comfortable to use, has many advanced measurement functions, it is comfortable, it is robust, it is reliable and with a remarkable durability.

User experience

One of the sometimes less talked-about aspects of a heart rate monitor is the famous user experience. That is to say, that it is intuitive to use and that all the functions can be found in an agile and comfortable way. Everything is managed from the 5 side buttons that the watch has. There is no touch screen but I do not think anything is missing.

In general to use the Polar Pacer Pro you will not need to read any instruction manual to get to use almost all the basic functions. You will have to spend a little more time if you want to get the most out of it. For example, we found the running tests to be a bit unintuitive.

Personalization of the sport mode

With this device on your wrist you can enjoy up to 15 sports where you can customize your training. Obviously in RUNNEA we have focused on analyzing its performance in running, trail running and triathlon, and we must conclude that it more than fulfills all these aspects by providing fast and accurate information on the basic data we are looking for in an entry-level heart rate monitor. If you opt for swimming or triathlon you will be interested in the following point.

Submersibility

If you're looking for an accurate way to track your training in the water, the Polar Pacer Pro delivers. This model has been designed specifically with these activities in mind so it can withstand harsh conditions such as saltwater exposure without breaking down after prolonged use underwater (up to 50 meters deep). It also comes equipped with a memory chip that stores up to 50 hours of data so you don't have to worry about losing any important information if something goes wrong.

Optical heart rate measurement

The optical heart rate measurement system allows you to track your heart rate every second during your workout. The Polar Pacer Pro software allows you to see how long it takes for your heart rate to recover after a workout or if there are any trends in your data over time. This helps you optimize your workouts to be as effective as possible and avoid injury or burnout from overtraining.

Review Polar Pacer Pro, RUNNEA tester functionalities

The watch also features activity tracking so you can monitor how many steps you take each day and how many calories you burn during those steps (if applicable). This data will be sent directly to your phone so you can see your progress towards your goals.

Activity, sleep and recovery tracking

Polar Pacer Pro also offers sleep tracking features that allow you to monitor when you fall asleep at night and when you wake up in the morning so you can get an accurate picture of how much restful sleep you're getting each night.

Design and aesthetics

This is a soberly designed watch. In the past Polar has had a less aesthetically pleasing look but since the launch of the Vantage line they are on par with any other heart rate monitor company. With the added bonus of always looking for practicality. In addition, the fact of having interchangeable straps makes the aesthetic part easily adaptable.

Connectivity

This small but powerful tool has many features that make it ideal for long distance runners who need to stay motivated during their training. One of its most useful features is its ability to connect via Bluetooth to any cell phone. Of course we can connect the Polar Pacer Pro with the RUNNEA APP, but it also has many other applications that can be integrated, such as Spotify, Pandora or Apple Music to liven up your training sessions.

The weight and size of the model

The watch's lightweight design is ideal for long runs, as its weight doesn't add any unnecessary pressure to the wrist.

With a claimed weight of 41 grams, it won't weigh you down on a marathon or other long-distance run.

The case is made of a comfortable yet durable plastic that can take a beating without breaking so you can focus more on running than protecting a heart rate monitor... We all know it's a great investment for any runner!

Review Polar Pacer Pro, RUNNEA tester specifications

The watch's dimensions make it compact and durable, so don't worry about accidentally knocking this watch against something while running. It has a diameter of 45 millimeters and a thickness of 11.5 millimeters, so it's small enough to take up too much space on your wrist.

Built-in barometer

The barometer is the main difference between this model and its more basic version. The Polar Pacer Pro uses a built-in barometer to measure altitude. The device uses this measurement to calculate your absolute air pressure at del mar level. This is necessary because air pressure changes with altitude: the higher you are, the lower the air pressure.

Calculating this air pressure is important for two reasons:

  • It helps the heart rate monitor get a more accurate reading of your true resting heart rate.
  • It can help you plan future runs in advance by giving you a general idea of how difficult your current altitude will be.
