Photos Polar Vantage M3
1 / 5The Polar Vantage M3 is a multisport sports watch that improves significantly over its predecessor, the Polar Vantage M2, incorporating a number of advanced features that we can find in top of the range watches and that will position it as a benchmark in the heart rate monitors & sports watches market, especially for its good value for money. Throughout this detailed analysis, we will explore its most outstanding features, its main novelties and the key differences with the Polar Vantage V3, a high-end model of the same brand.
Compact, lightweight and rugged design
The Polar Vantage M3 is presented with a more modern, slim and compact design, with only 44 mm in diameter and a weight of 53 grams, which makes it an extremely comfortable watch for day to day and the most demanding training sessions. Its 1.28-inch AMOLED display with 416x416 pixel resolution offers excellent visibility in all conditions, whether indoors or in direct sunlight. In addition, its Gorilla Glass 3 glass protects it from scratches, providing durability and resistance to a device that is designed to withstand the most intense workouts and adverse conditions even in the mountains.
Its casing is made of stainless steel, which adds a premium touch to the watch, and its 22 mm silicone strap is easily interchangeable, allowing customization of the device according to the user's taste. The Vantage M3 is water resistant to 50 meters, making it ideal for water sports or training in the rain.
Features Polar Vantage M3 vs. other Polar watches
Battery and modes of use
One of the highlights of the Polar Vantage M3 is its 310 mAh battery, which offers a battery life of up to 30 hours in training mode with GPS and heart rate sensors activated, or up to 70 hours in low power mode (ECO). In smartwatch mode, the watch can last up to 7 days without recharging. This durability is especially useful for athletes who do prolonged training or participate in long-distance races, such as marathons or triathlons.
Advanced training features
The Polar Vantage M3 comes equipped with a number of tools that greatly enhance the user experience during training. These include:
- Dual GPS and offline maps: this is one of the great new features of the Vantage M3. Thanks to the dual-frequency GPS, the accuracy in tracking routes is much higher, even in areas with limited coverage, such as forests or dense urban environments. In addition, it incorporates the offline map function, allowing navigation without the need to be connected to a mobile device.
- Training Load Pro and recovery: This feature allows users to measure training load and get recommendations on the right balance between effort and recovery. It is ideal for preventing overtraining and optimizing long-term performance.
- running power: The Polar Vantage M3 measures running power directly from the wrist, allowing runners to monitor their effort more accurately during their workouts, without the need for other external accessories.
- Advanced outdoor metrics: Includes features such as vertical speed and AAS (Average Ascending Speed), designed for mountain runners and cyclists who want to monitor their performance on uneven terrain and climbs.
- Recovery Pro and performance tests: The watch is designed to provide detailed analysis of recovery through the recording of sleep and other wellness metrics. In addition, it has specific tests to assess running, cycling and walking performance, allowing a more comprehensive monitoring of the athlete's physical progress
Smart and health functions
In addition to its sporting capabilities, the Polar Vantage M3 offers a number of smart features that make it ideal for everyday use:
- Mobile notifications: the watch receives notifications directly from the phone, allowing the user to always stay connected without having to take the phone out of the pocket.
- Music control: During workouts, users can control music from the watch, adding convenience and avoiding distractions.
- Sleep analysis and recovery: With features such as Nightly Recharge, Sleep Plus Stages and Serene, the Polar Vantage M3 offers detailed sleep tracking and provides feedback on sleep quality. These tools are essential to ensure proper recovery and improve sports performance.
- Electrocardiogram at the wrist: Another innovative feature is the ability to perform an ECG directly from the wrist, a function that makes monitoring heart health simple and accessible
Main new features of the Polar Vantage M3
The Vantage M3 retains many of the features that already worked well in its predecessor, the Vantage M2, but introduces a number of new features that enhance the user experience:
- AMOLED display: unlike the Vantage M2, which featured a MIP display, the Vantage M3 incorporates a high-resolution AMOLED display, which greatly improves the sharpness and colors of the interface.
- Dual-frequency GPS: This is a key upgrade for athletes looking for greater accuracy in tracking routes, especially in difficult areas.
- Offline maps and turn-by-turn navigation: These features, present in more advanced models such as the Vantage V3, are now part of the Vantage M3, making it a very complete option for athletes who train outdoors.
- Longer battery life: Although the Vantage M2 already offered considerable battery life, the M3 improves on this feature, offering up to 70 hours in ECO mode, making it perfect for long-lasting activities.
- Electrocardiogram on the wrist: As we have already mentioned in the wellness and health section, one of the most innovative additions is the ability to perform an ECG from the wrist, a feature that, until now, was only available in high-end models such as the Polar Vantage V3.
Comparison with Polar Vantage V3
The Polar Vantage M3 shares many features with its "big brother" the Vantage V3, but it also has some important differences that justify the price difference between the two models.
Display: Both watches feature a high-quality AMOLED display, but the Vantage V3 is slightly larger in size (1.39 inches versus the M3's 1.28) and has a higher resolution.
Durability: The Vantage V3 is certified to the MIL-STD-810G standard, making it more rugged in extreme conditions. The M3, while rugged, does not have this military certification.
Offline maps: While both watches have offline navigation and maps, the Vantage V3 watch has additional features such as Track Back, which allows you to return to your starting point by following the same route.
Power and performance: The Vantage V3 also includes a higher performance chipset (with a more powerful CPU and greater storage capacity), making it a faster device with more data analysis functions.
Battery life: In this section, the Vantage V3 stands out with up to 43 hours of battery life in high-precision mode, compared to 30 hours for the M3. However, both models are suitable for prolonged workouts.
Who is the Polar Vantage M3 for?
The Polar Vantage M3 is designed for multisport athletes who are looking for a complete and versatile sports watch, but don't necessarily need all the premium features of a Vantage V3. It is ideal for runners, cyclists, swimmers and athletes who train in varied environments and want a device that offers detailed metrics and accurate navigation.
Its lightweight and compact design makes it perfect for both training and everyday use, while its recovery and wellness features make it a valuable tool for managing the balance between training and rest. It is also an excellent choice for those who value offline navigation and GPS accuracy in their outdoors activities.
The Polar Vantage M3 is a significant evolution from its Vantage M2 predecessor and offers a host of advanced features that bring it closer to the level of a Vantage V3, but at a more affordable price. Its combination of lightweight design, AMOLED display, dual GPS, offline mapping and advanced training features make it an exceptional choice for athletes looking for a high-quality sports watch without compromising performance or durability.
Review of Polar Vantage M3
Lionel Nattes
TesterPolar Vantage M3: The best choice for runners looking for a versatile and complete watch without compromising on quality.
The Polar Vantage M3, the latest model in Polar's line of running and multisport watches, arrived just in time for me to take it to the New York Marathon, allowing me to put it to the test in real-world conditions and in a demanding scenario. To conduct the test I focused on four key aspects:
- GPS accuracy
- Battery life
- Running comfort
- Offline map functionality
The Vantage M3 includes an interesting new feature: the ability to use offline maps, ideal for exploring New York City in the days leading up to the race. So I divided the test into two parts: an exploration outing using a track to test the offline maps and the test running the marathon.
First impressions of the Polar Vantage M3
If you're already used to Polar's interface, the Vantage M3 will feel familiar and easy to use as the menus, buttons and touchscreen are very similar to other models. Also, I consider myself a little lucky, because I was able to test the latest Polar models, the Vantage V3 and the Grit X2 Pro, so I'll be able to tell you about them as well throughout the review, seeing differences and similarities between the three devices.
First impressions were positive, especially if you're already familiar with the Polar interface. But for those not used to Polar, the interface is also intuitive, as its five buttons (for navigating, confirming, going back and controlling the screen) complement the touchscreen well and are simple to use.
The touchscreen is fluid, but I personally prefer not to rely on it, as in rainy or sweaty running conditions it's not always practical and I want to know how to do everything with the buttons. On the other hand, for times when I'm not doing sports, i.e. for day-to-day use, I find the touchscreen more convenient and easier to use than the buttons. In addition, the AMOLED screen offers excellent sharpness and visibility, especially useful for those who wear glasses, as I do. This resolution allows you to see up to four pieces of data per screen, which goes beyond mere visual appeal, providing important functional value.
What athlete profile is the Polar Vantage M3 aimed at?
The Vantage M3 is a watch designed for athletes in general who are looking for advanced features and value for money. It is ideal for those who need GPS tracking, detailed analysis of their workouts and the possibility of offline maps, all in a lightweight and comfortable device.
In the specific case of runners, especially asphalt runners, the Vantage M3 stands out as an affordable option for those looking for running accuracy without reaching the cost or weight of high-end models such as the Vantage V3 or Grit X2 Pro. For those who are new to running or prefer a versatile and economical watch, the Vantage M3 brings together a combination of technical features with outstanding accessibility.
My experience testing it at the New York Marathon
I was pleasantly surprised by the battery life. I started the marathon with the watch at 100% at 4:30 am and, after running 3 hours and 35 minutes, it still had 81% battery. I didn't charge the watch until Tuesday at 12:00, when it still had 60% left. This means that for marathons and extended workouts, the M3's battery is more than sufficient.
What I liked most about the Polar Vantage M3
Lightweight and quality
One of the things I liked most about the Vantage M3 is its light weight, weighing only 53 grams. Although it uses simpler materials compared to other Polar models, the watch doesn't lose functionality and still offers the full Polar experience.
Offline maps
Another feature that stands out is the offline maps functionality, ideal for exploring new routes without worrying about getting lost. And, while downloading the maps can be a bit tedious, you're not going to need to do it many times, as we tend to train on the same routes most of the time. Creating a GPX track in Strava and exporting it to the M3 is very easy, thanks to the direct integration between Strava and Polar Flow, which allows you to select and mark your favorite routes for use on the watch.
Here's how to use the maps: the watch shows the route in red on the map and the path travelled in blue. Although it doesn't give specific instructions, the AMOLED screen map is clear enough to guide you visually through the track. The only catch is that the first time you use it, you'll have to calibrate the compass, which takes about two or three minutes, but the process is simple and guided.
Battery
I was also pleasantly surprised by the battery life: although it's not as extensive as other models, it's sufficient for the marathon. After the race, there was still battery left for several days, which gives you extra confidence for competitions or long workouts. It offers:
- Up to 30 hours of autonomy in training mode with GPS and heart rate activated.
- It can reach up to 70 hours in low power or ECO mode.
- In smartwatch mode, the watch can last up to 7 days without recharging.
GPS reliability in a challenging urban environment
New York, with its tall buildings, tunnels and bridges, is a challenging environment for any GPS. Still, the Vantage M3, which includes dual-band GPS technology, performed well: it clocked a distance of 42,820 meters, which is only 625 meters longer than the marathon. Compared to other runners on Strava, the M3 was among the most accurate, showing its good performance in adverse conditions.
Possible areas of improvement for the Polar Vantage M3
Although the Vantage M3 is a well-rounded watch, it has some points that could be improved. The accuracy of the heart rate monitor, as with most wrist devices, is not entirely accurate, especially at times of high intensity or rapid changes in heart rate, where it can have small variations.
Another aspect to consider is the offline map system: while it is useful for orientation, it does not issue alerts when you deviate from the track you are following. This means that, should you stray from the planned route, the watch will not alert you immediately, which can complicate navigation in less familiar areas.
Finally, the strap buckle uses a two-hole adjustment system. This design, while secure, can be awkward to adjust during a run, as it requires some precision to fit properly, especially if you're on the move or with sweaty hands.
What are the differences between the Vantage V3 and the Grit X2 Pro?
Compared to the Vantage V3 and the Grit X2 Pro, the Vantage M3 uses less sophisticated materials, such as plastic in the front casing, as opposed to aluminum in the Vantage V3 and stainless steel in the Grit X2 Pro. In addition, the battery life is shorter (30 hours versus 70 hours for the other two models), and the display, at 1.28 inches, is slightly smaller than the other two (1.39 inches).
However, its smaller size and lighter materials reduce its weight, making it more comfortable for long runs. The price is also cheaper, and while it lacks the toughness of the top models, it retains all the functionality an average runner might need.
Why should you choose the Polar Vantage M3?
The Polar Vantage M3 is an interesting option for road runners looking for the functionality of a Vantage V3 at a more affordable price. It stands out for its light weight, its AMOLED screen and its offline mapping capability, which although it doesn't offer detailed instructions, is very useful for visual guidance. For trail or trekking activities of less than 20-25 hours, the Vantage M3 can be a solid option, as long as you don't need more autonomy.
In addition, it includes the option of sleep analysis, training recommendations, animated strength exercises, oxygen saturation measurement and cardiovascular load, offering a full range of data for runners and athletes.
In short, the Polar M3 is an excellent tool for activities of up to 20 hours, ideal for those looking for a technical device without the cost and weight of more advanced models.
