adidas Running seeks to differentiate itself from its competition with technological innovations such as the revolutionary Boost foam, or the use of recycled plastic in its shoes. And now we have the adidas 4DFWD. A model made with 3D printing that also seeks to improve the runner's running efficiency by seeking forward momentum in each stride. adidas 4DFWD is the sum of several years of data collection from athletes who have used Carbon's Digital Light Synthesis™ 3D printing technology. The result is a curious geometric structure in the shoe's midsole, which is also designed with 39% bio-based material.
Features of the adidas 4DFWD: Boosting the runner's inertia
With this new innovative technological midsole design, adidas seeks to help the runner take advantage of the horizontal inertia of the race in each stride. According to the brand, the aim is to reduce the braking force "by 15%". The result is a midsole formed by a lattice structure that provides better management of running economy.
Just as it did with German chemical company BASF for the release of the renowned Boost cushioning system, adidas has once again entered into a strategic agreement with California-based 3D Carbon, pioneers in using digital light projection and liquid resin- and oxygen-permeable optics to bring out high-performance, longer-lasting products. This fruitful collaboration has been combining efforts since 2017 to present the world's first 3D printed midsole. The result of this commitment to cutting-edge technology means that the adidas 4DFWD's midsole adapt to specific movement patterns.
The adidas 4DFWD features a PRIMEKNIT+ fabric upper that we have already seen in shoes like the adidas UltraBoost 21. It works perfectly with the new midsole, supporting the runner in every forward motion with a sock-like fit, while allowing the foot to breathe freely.
Another important detail in the new adidas 4DFWD is its inclusion of the Primegreen concept, highlighting the the three stripes brand's commitment to protecting the environment. Thus, this Adidas model features a combination of high-performance recycled materials, and has discarded the use of virgin polyester, for example.
Strengths and highlights of the adidas 4DFWD
FWD CELL midsole: Geometric lattice-like structure made of 39% bio-based material, manufactured with 3D printing. Provides 23% more cushioning and generates three times more forward motion compared to previous generations of 4D midsole under vertical load in laboratory conditions.
PRIMEKNIT+ UPPER: Using historical mapping data, the PRIMEKNIT+ upper has been designed to work perfectly in sync with the midsole, supporting the runner through every movement with a sock-like fit while allowing the foot to breathe freely.
3D Digital Light Synthesis: In collaboration with the American company Carbon 3D, the midsole concept of these Adidas 4DFWD is completely different from what we have seen so far: a lattice structure, where the material is able to compress forward, counteracting the forces of impact. The sensation felt by the runner is that of being propelled forward, a unique process transforming the vertical impact into a horizontal force.
