Brooks Ghost Max

The Brooks Ghost Max has marked a before and after in my experience as an ultra distance runner. This maximalist model from Brooks, released in 2023, masterfully combines maximum cushioning with a high profile to deliver an exceptionally comfortable, smooth and lightweight run.

At the end of September I ran the Millau 100km (100k Asphalt) in the Brooks Glycerin 20 GTS. After that, I rested 10 days and that's when I got my hands on the Brooks Ghost Max. I read Brooks' description, focused on protecting the runner, being the maximalist version of the Ghost model, which I already tested earlier in the year.

Considering Brooks' reputation and my previous good experience with the Brooks Ghost 15, I thought it would be a fantastic opportunity to get back into running after the 100km wear and tear. At that point, I needed protection, stability and, most importantly, to once again enjoy running without pain. The 100 km leaves traces, even if you finish happily, because it represents extensive and intense preparation, and then the race itself. Of course, you only remember the moment you cross the finish line and everything is beautiful, but you don't forget the effort and the previous preparation needed to finish it.

I was eager to fall in love again with running easily, with those outings at a leisurely pace that leave you with full happiness, without the shadow of any discomfort. It was with this in mind that I faced the Brooks Ghost Max test.

My experience with the Brooks Ghost Max

There are three aspects of the Ghost Max that I loved and one that could be improved.

The cushioning is fantastic, as it usually is in maximalist shoes. They are a real pleasure to run in. Although they are not ideal for high paces, that's what carbon plate shoes are for; Ghost Max cushion and protect your stride.

As for stability, my strides were a bit uneven at first, but the Ghost Max gave me confidence at all times. They are stable, but without losing comfort while running.

The rocker concept in the midsole allowed for smooth transitions, propelling me fluidly from back to front.

After 15 days of training with them, I had a marathon on the calendar, just to enjoy myself. After taking on the burden of preparing for a 100 km and digesting the race itself, we reach a fitness that allows us to tackle a marathon at a leisurely pace.

So I took the Brooks Ghost Max to the Porto Marathon. The characteristics observed during training were confirmed: comfort, protection, stability and smooth transitions. In fact, the rocker effect brings a certain dynamism that, in my case and without having prepared specifically, made me finish the marathon 10 minutes below my predicted time.

The aspect to improve is that they are not very waterproof, during the Porto marathon, it rained briefly but intensely, leaving us all soaked and forming puddles of water. The Ghost Max absorbed a lot of water. When the rain stopped and after a few minutes, the shoes had already evacuated much of the water, allowing me to continue at the same pace without major problems. A Gore Tex version would be a joy for those of us who run in rainy areas.

Profile and main features

The model of the Ghost Max stands out for its high profile, with an impressive midsole reaching 39 millimeters in the rear and 33 millimeters in the forefoot. This design provides a 6-millimeter drop, lower than that of Ghost 15, but within a much more comfortable and maximalist platform. DNA Loft V2, an extremely lightweight compound incorporated into the midsole, is one of the keys to its exceptional cushioning. This material not only reduces the shoe's weight to just 290 grams, but also provides remarkable protection and reactivity, especially on medium and long distance runs. It's a firm feel that may not appeal to all runners, but undoubtedly provides ample cushioning and protection for your joints while running.
