HOKA ONE ONE's award-winning Clifton franchise has been revamped, and although the changes may seem subtle, they are noticeable with every step. In fact, the American brand's product developers have opted to keep everything that proved successful with the last model, and only update its most critical aspects, and thus the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 8 remains one of the brand's signature running shoes, with its soft and lightweight cushioning.

The HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 8 is a trainer with maximum cushioning, and its main updates can be found in several of the model's strategic areas, such as its upper and midsole. The aim of the new version of the Clifton 8 is to improve the running experience with a better response, without compromising the trainer's stability and light tread. Now, when wearing the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 8, your transitions will be smoother and more responsive.

Why might the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 8 be the right running shoe for you?

As with previous versions, the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 8 has not changed its target audience: neutral-gait runners looking for a great balance between cushioning and stability, as well as great responsiveness and lightness.

With its low-key shape and a 5 millimetre drop, a trademark of the North American company, HOKA ONE ONE's Clifton 8 can be adapted to run at different paces, and always with medium and long distances as the ultimate goal.

In addition, the Clifton 8 series has also managed to establish itself as one of the best trainers to carry out recovery runs which are highly necessary in personalised training plans for all types of runners. Its performance speaks for itself: a dynamic and well-cushioned stride, optimal for high-volume mileage runs with one of the highest levels of protection and safety in the running shoe market.

So, if we analyse the main new features of HOKA ONE ONE's Clifton 8, a trainer with top-of-the-range cushioning, one major update is an improvement in aerodynamics, where the redesign of its upper plays a big part.

But let's look first at the impressive midsole. The eighth version of the Clifton has a compression-moulded EVA midsole, which is lighter and more reactive than the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 7, which means that transitions are lighter and smoother, and, no doubt, more efficient over every kilometre you run.

The heel area has also been reinforced to add more cushioning and comfort in this key area of the running shoe. Similarly, the combination of the upper's redesigned technical mesh and a well-padded tongue serve to increase comfort and breathability.

Key points of the new HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 8

Taking everything that has been said about the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 8, let's summarise with these three key points:

  • Meta-Rocker midsole contributing to a smoother ride.
  • Combination of a more breathable mesh upper and better padded tongue for improved fit and comfort.
  • Reinforced heel with extra cushioning to increase the sensation of a soft and light footstrike.

Regarding the technical specifications, the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 8 still has a 5-millimetre drop and lighter weights with about 250 grams for the male model and about 215 grams for the female version. In short, a lighter version than the previous version of the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 8.

The concept of the new HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 8 is none other than to deliver on its promise: comfortable and soft cushioning with its maximalist midsole and the brand's most cutting-edge resources so that the runner is able to run with responsiveness and lightness in each step, guaranteeing success.

Review of HOKA Clifton 8

HOKA Clifton 8, quality response for all distances and paces

I had never run with HOKA before and had long wanted to test some of the most emblematic silhouettes of the French company; as is the case of its award-winning Clifton saga. HOKA 's best-selling shoe par excellence is now in its eighth edition and is a benchmark model for completing daily workouts.

A running shoe that stands out for its exquisite versatility in terms of pace and distance, something that I have been able to verify for more than 150 kilometers with them on my feet. To be honest, I'm not used to running with low drops, the Clifton has a 5 mm drop, and I needed some time of adaptation to get the most out of this runner.

HOKA 's most dynamic shoe for a wide range of paces.

Its geometry and reactive cushioning make this HOKA Clifton 8 a very versatile training shoe. It stands out for its lightness and softness - it has reduced its weight compared to the previous model - aimed at completing all kinds of distances on asphalt in a wide variety of paces. Of course, this is a maximalist shoe, its height is very far from the models that mostly dominate the market and if we are not used to it, we should consider an adaptation period before using it to the maximum.

For what kind of runners are these HOKA Clifton 8 oriented?

Personally I would limit the runner's profile to a light to medium weight runner, those who are under 75kg in the case of men and 60-65kg in the case of women. Perfect for completing all types of workouts, from running at slower paces, above the 5 watches:30 min/km, to series and fartleks under 4:00min/km.

However, I would say that the perfect range in which this shoe moves is around 4:15 - 5 min/km; this is where I have been able to experience the true potential of this shoe. Although, I repeat, it's also going to work great at both lively and easy paces. A shoe that doesn't stand out for its wide flexibility capacity but that captivates you with its soft and light feel on contact with the ground.

In addition, let's remember that the Clifton 8 family has also managed to position itself as one of the best recovery shoes.

What did I like most about the HOKA Clifton 8?

The cushioning is plush and soft. Without a doubt, just like HOKA's top of the line cushioning, the HOKA Bondi 8, it is to put on these Clifton 8 and feel an excellent sense of comfort. The new density and softness of the EVA foam injected into the Clifton, means an extra softness but at the "expense" of some reactivity during the take-off phase. In addition, it should be noted that compared to its predecessor, the HOKA Clifton 7, it has somewhat reduced its weight for extra lightness.

High profile and good cushioning. In my opinion, versatility is the main argument in favor of this model. It is a shoe that enjoys a dynamic cushioning that works perfectly in a wide range of paces. In addition, it offers enough firmness and softness to accumulate kilometers and kilometers in your daily runs.

Another aspect that stands out is the aesthetics of the model. A refined design, with a successful combination of colors and its maximalist essence that will seduce you completely.

Possible points for improvement

Being a shoe that enjoys a good dose of dynamism, I consider the padding of the tongue to be excessive. Protection yes but not adding unnecessary weight and I think that, in this aspect, HOKA has some room for improvement company

Excessive padding makes the breathability inside the shoe is somewhat diminished.

Final Conclusions

The versatility in paces and distances offered by these HOKA Clifton 8 is something that cannot and should not go unnoticed. A shoe that enjoys a cushioning dynamic enough to follow you in all types of training. A daily training shoe that, although it is true, may require some adaptation, once you get used to it, it becomes your perfect ally also in those recovery races.
