Year 2023

The new Kiprun KD900 is the result of more than 10 years of experience in footwear at Decathlon and is characterized by great cushioning and lightness, ideal for the fastest runners.

The Kiprun KD900 is a running shoe that features the best technologies developed by Decathlon and the lightest components after different research and development studies that have shown that a lighter shoe improves performance during races thanks to greater energy savings.

Main features of the Kiprun KD900

The various Decathlon teams involved in the development of the Kiprun KD900 aimed to create a dynamic, cushioned and lightweight running shoe for all those looking for great reactivity in each of their strides.

The upper of the Kiprun KD900 has hardly any protection in order to be as light as possible, but it will be breathable while competing.

The midsole of the shoe has a foam in collaboration with Arkema, a leading French chemical reference in the running market. This alliance has given rise to the VFOA foam made of Pebax material, 20% more dynamic than classic shoes. Arkema's Pebax foam combined with the geometry of the sole offers highly reactive cushioning.

In addition to this highly reactive cushioning, according to studies, Arkema Pebax foam guarantees the same properties as on the first day for up to 1000 kilometers.

The geometry of the heel of the shoe was inspired by a "donut", thus optimizing the deformation of the material to recover maximum energy in each of our strides. The sole makes it possible to exploit all the qualities of the shoe: a toe geometry that maximizes the expression of the reactive Pebax foam and a heel geometry with an intuitive shape placed in the only place where cushioning is sought.

The outsole is designed in a similar way to a car tire, to run efficiently without losing control even in the rain. The geometry of the KIPRUN KD900 sole, together with the choice of rubber, guarantees excellent grip on wet ground and in curves, even at high speed.

Ideal Kiprun KD900 runner profile

The Kiprun KD900 is not designed to be used by everyone who likes to run, the Kiprun KD900 is intended for faster runners with a neutral stride and good running technique. The lighter the runner, the more they will be able to take advantage of the shoe.

In terms of paces and distances, this is a shoe for fast running on asphalt, even for running on track and field, and from 10 km to marathon distances the shoe will respond without any problems.

Technical specifications of the Kiprun KD900

In this section we have to highlight mainly two data, one is the weight that makes it a really light shoe, specifically weighs 218 grams in the men's version and only 185 grams in the women's version.

Regarding the drop, the Kiprun KD900 has a drop of 8 mm, perhaps a drop somewhat higher than other fast shoes and carbon plate that we can find in the market today but also provide us with an extra comfort that is always appreciated.

In conclusion, thanks to its lightness, Pebax foam and geometry, the KIPRUN KD900 are ideal shoes for all those who like to run fast on asphalt, whether in training or competitions.

Review of Kiprun KD900

Analysis Kiprun KD900, Decathlon wants to sit at the table of the major running brands

The Kiprun KD900 is not just another shoe in the Decathlon market; it is a clear commitment to compete with the big brands in the market with 2 outstanding features: innovation in design and affordable price. From the moment they arrived at the RUNNEA offices, we were struck by the midsole, divided into two distinct pieces: one circular in the heel area and the other covering the front of the shoe. This feature not only gives it a distinctive look but also promises a differential running experience, combining cushioning and responsiveness in an efficient way.

This differential design led us to test the KD900 in different conditions and distances. How does this design translate in practice? Can these shoes deliver performance comparable to the big brands in the running market? We invite you to continue reading this detailed review of the Kiprun KD900, where we explore not only its design but also its functionality, comfort and performance on the road.

A commitment to innovation

The KD900 are a bold statement of innovation and technology. The collaboration with new materials research and development companies, such as the French company Arkema, has resulted in VFOA foam made of Pebax® material, which is 20% more dynamic than conventional foams. The geometry of the sole, which resembles the shape of a "doughnut", optimizes the deformation of the material to recover maximum energy. The sole makes it possible to exploit all the qualities of the shoe, offering highly reactive cushioning and excellent grip. Lightweight and the choice of lighter components and an optimized sole design contribute to this achievement, without compromising comfort and durability.

What type of runner we recommend them for

These KD900 are ideal for the neutral runner looking for a versatile and responsive shoe. Their innovative design and responsive cushioning make them suitable for both daily training and competition. Excellent grip on wet ground and cornering makes them suitable for runners looking for control and stability in different weather conditions.

Kiprun KD900 running sensations

Running with the KD900 is a pleasant and balanced experience. From the first steps, they feel comfortable and cozy. Up'bar technology in the outsole provides dynamic response, while K-Ring cushioning ensures a smooth transition. The outsole offers reliable grip on a variety of surfaces, and the response doesn't let up, even when fatigue starts to set in. The feel on the foot is supportive and comfortable, with a responsiveness that invites you to pick up the pace.

Our sensations in detail:

Sensations in the first strides with the Kiprun KD900: From the first steps, the KD900 feel comfortable and with a pleasant feel at gentle paces. The midsole absorbs shock well and efficiently, and the stride transition is remarkably smooth.

Varied paces: As the pace increases, the Up'bar technology in the outsole starts to shine, providing a dynamic response that is especially felt in sprints and changes of pace. The shoe adapts well to different speeds, allowing for versatile running.

Cushioning and support: The cushioning is sufficient without being too soft, offering a good balance between support and ground feel. This translates into a stable and controlled ride, even over longer distances.

Fit and comfort: The fit is comfortable and secure, with sufficient toe box clearance and adequate midfoot support. The tongue and heel collar (very lightweight mind you) offer soft support that avoids pressure points.

Grip and traction: The outsole provides good grip on a variety of surfaces, from paved roads to dirt trails. Traction feels secure even in wet conditions.

Fatigue Response: Even when fatigue begins to set in, the KD900 maintain their comfort and support. Cushioning remains efficient, and responsiveness does not diminish, helping to maintain proper running technique.

Recommended distances

KD900 are versatile and adapt to different distances. The lightness and responsiveness are ideal for 5K and 10K races, while the cushioning and support make them suitable for half marathons and daily workouts. Although we could use them for longer distances, the cushioning and especially the support may not be enough to run for example a marathon, if your running technique is not very efficient. But the combination of lightness and cushioning makes them a solid choice for a variety of distances and paces.

Our recommendation: Perfect for 10k and half marathon races at 4:15 to slower paces.

What I liked the most

  • Differential design: I loved the midsole. The design and geometry of the sole are truly unique and offer a different running experience than anything I've tried before.
  • Responsive cushioning: The Pebax® foam offers very responsive cushioning, providing an energized feel with every step.
  • Lightweight: The Kiprun KD900 is surprisingly light, which makes it a very versatile shoe for both fast runs and more leisurely rides.
  • Grip: Very good wet and cornering grip, providing confidence in variable conditions.

Possible improvements

  • Foot support: Perhaps it would add a little more stability to the model. It is a shoe for light to medium weight runners. It has little structure in the heel and the "donut" shape in that area can be perceived as somewhat unstable for heavier runners and heel strikers.

Conclusion

The Kiprun KD900 is a shoe that has pleasantly surprised me. Offering a combination of innovative features and solid performance. From its distinctive design to its comfort and versatility, the KD900 are a solid choice for those looking for something new and different in their running shoe. Their commitment to innovation and ability to deliver over a variety of distances and conditions make them a worthy addition to any runner's collection. I'll keep them for my medium paced running days.
