This new iteration preserves the iconic essence that has historically earned it widespread acclaim and popularity, while introducing a plethora of innovations to enhance its versatility as an all-terrain shoe.

If you share our enthusiasm for the New Balance Hierro series and are eager to discover everything the latest eighth edition has to offer, continue reading. RUNNEA brings you a comprehensive breakdown of all its features!

New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro v8: Profile

Main new features of the New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro v8

New Balance reaffirms its dedication to the trail running segment with its most iconic model, now enhanced with new materials and more sustainable technologies. This evolution transforms it into a model that's more comprehensive, versatile, and efficient than ever before

The shoe introduces a revolutionary upper crafted through a printing process that eliminates the need for water, marking the most significant visual, aesthetic, and tactile transformation of the model. This approach, distinct from the one employed in the New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro v7, results in zero waste. The commitment to sustainability is evident in this latest model, featuring front protections made from recycled materials.

Continuing with its innovative features, the midsole boasts the brand's flagship Fresh Foam X technology, now with an increased proportion of natural material — up to 40% of the foam — to ensure unparalleled softness and comfort.

The outsole retains the Vibram compound, a hallmark of the previous edition, renowned for its excellent grip and durability. The new version introduces the Vibram Ecostep Natural outsole, blending natural and recycled rubber to maintain the safety and traction New Balance wearers have come to expect.

Additionally, this edition features a revamped lug design, offering a greater number of smaller, evenly spaced lugs across the sole. This design aims to enhance grip, although it may present challenges in more technical terrain due to the increased difficulty in achieving traction.

Ideal runner profile: New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro v8

In line with the celebrated tradition of this series, the New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro v8 stands out as one of the brand's most versatile trail running shoes. It caters to a broad spectrum of runners, particularly those of medium weight with a neutral gait, offering unparalleled comfort and cushioning at all times while ensuring optimal stability and protection.

The profile of the target runner, characterized by versatility and ambivalence, remains consistent with previous versions. Consequently, this model continues to be one of the most adaptable on the market, providing softness, security, and stability even for runners exceeding 85 kilograms. It acts as a reliable companion in the mountains, adept at handling both compact and challenging, technical, or muddy terrains.

Recommended distances for the New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro v8

This latest iteration of the esteemed trail running model from New Balance exhibits a slight increase in weight, tipping the scales at approximately 318 grams for a men's size 9.5 US. This minor adjustment, seemingly negligible at first glance, stems from an intention to offer slightly more structure and support, despite a general trend towards reducing the silhouette, particularly in the heel counter area.

Therefore, we assert its versatility. This model is apt for both training and racing across various paces and distances, up to marathon length, catering well to medium paces. Designed for both men and women, the shoe is likely to impress a wide audience.

In summary, the New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro v8 maintains its status as the brand's premier trail running shoe, trusted for delivering comfort and cushioning. This edition embraces sustainability and the use of recycled materials, positioning it as formidable competition for models like the Salomon Sense Ride 5 or the Nike ZoomX Zegama.

New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro v8: A shoe for everything in the mountains

The New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro v8 is the latest model of the iconic Hierro series of the american brand. Designed to offer good performance over long distances, these shoes have undergone a major redesign in order to be more competitive and reliable in different mountain terrains. In this review, we will analyze their main features, the type of trail runner they are aimed at, the terrain in which they perform best and the differences with regard to the previous model. We will also discuss their pros and cons, to help you decide if these shoes are the best option for your needs.

Type of trail runner

The New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro v8 is a very versatile option that can meet your needs whether you are a long distance runner or prefer shorter outings at moderate paces. These shoes stand out for offering consistent comfort during long runs, making them ideal if you're looking for a shoe that will allow you to run long miles without sacrificing comfort.

If you are a heavier runner, the Hierro v8 will offer excellent cushioning. However, it is important to note that if you are over 85kg, you may notice a slight compression in the midsole after several hours of continuous use on flat terrain. This compression is due to the fact that the Fresh Foam X midsole, although soft and comfortable, takes time to return to its original shape after prolonged compression. You won't notice this sensation if you are under that weight. You will enjoy constant and comfortable cushioning throughout your run.

Shoes design

The upper of the Hierro v8 is laser designed, without using any chemical paints, which gives it a clean, modern and above all sustainable finish. It combines a mesh toe area with a more closed structure and thermosealed side straps, providing a proper fit. Although the fit is correct, it is not its greatest virtue, and may require a good adjustment of the lacing tension to prevent the tongue from slipping. A tongue attached to the sides of the shoe or a pin that immobilizes it through the lacing would be almost essential to improve this aspect.

The last of the Hierro v8 offers adequate room, allowing your toes not to be cramped but without excessive room to move. The interior of the upper is soft to the touch, which avoids discomfort and chafing. The high profiles (32mm in the heel and 26mm in the forefoot) contribute to a feeling of height and protection, keeping you away from small obstacles on the way.

Recommended distances

The Fresh Foam X Hierro v8 are specifically designed to cover very long distances safely and comfortably. During our tests, we ran outings of between 15 and 30 km, and the shoe proved to be very secure and comfortable which I see makes them optimal for tackling longer distances. In fact, the RUNNEA Trail Team will use them for the UTMB in Val d'Aran in 2024.

The Fresh Foam X midsole, notable for its soft feel, provides immediate comfort from the first use.

Cushioning and stability

The rockered midsole eases foot strike transition, making running an easier task. However, stability can be a weak point at certain times, especially when stepping into uneven terrain on the heel, which can cause the ankle to twist outwards. This model is better suited for less technical terrain, where it can unfold its full potential without compromising the runner's stability.

On runs of up to 100 km, the shoe remained comfortable and reliable, without causing a need to change due to discomfort or lack of cushioning. However, on terrain with sharp rocks, particularly in the forefoot, some discomfort can be felt. Despite the high profiles, caution should be exercised on uneven terrain to avoid these inconveniences.

Type of terrain

The Vibram Ecostep Natural outsole of the Fresh Foam X Hierro v8 is optimized for dry terrain. This outsole, which reuses leftover parts from other Vibram outsoles, has a higher number of lugs than the previous version, improving grip and traction. On loose, compacted dirt surfaces or trails with small stones, the outsole offers excellent performance.

Traction and grip

New Balance Fresh FoamX Hierro v8 review

On wet terrain, such as wet grass or slightly muddy trails, it also performs well, although caution should be exercised on wet rocks. Overall, the outsole is quite versatile and offers good traction in various conditions. However, support could be improved, especially in technical terrain where greater stability and precision are required.

Protection is another strong point of this model. The high profiles act as a natural barrier against small obstacles such as rocks and roots, in addition to avoiding getting wet in shallow puddles. The reinforced toe cap with the "Toe Protect" system effectively protects the toes against frontal impacts.

As for ventilation, the upper breathes very well, preventing overheating and keeping the foot cool and comfortable. In addition, any water that may enter the interior dries quickly, which is an advantage in wet conditions.

Durability

In terms of durability, we detected some initial manufacturing issues: a piece of the inner heat-sealing and the midsole of the right shoe were slightly detached. Fortunately, these problems did not worsen and did not affect the shoe's performance. The upper remained in excellent condition after 231 km accumulated.

The outsole behaved quite well. It is true that some of the lugs, especially on the outer area near the toes, showed signs of premature wear, but this happens to me with all shoes. Despite this, the upper and midsole continue to offer good performance and comfort over the miles. The durability of the outsole is not bad, could it be better? yes, but I don't consider it to have a generalized premature wear.

Comparisons with the previous model

Compared to the previous version, the Fresh Foam X Hierro v8 have several notable improvements. The Vibram Ecostep Natural outsole is one of the most significant upgrades, offering improved traction and grip on dry terrain. The Fresh Foam X midsole design has also been refined to provide improved comfort and cushioning, although compression under heavy loads remains an area for improvement.

The upper has been redesigned with a focus on breathability and fit. The combination of mesh and heat-sealing provides a secure fit but could benefit from an upgraded tongue to prevent shifting and improve support. Overall, the improvements to the upper and outsole design make the Hierro v8 more versatile and comfortable than its predecessors, although there is still room for refinement in some areas.
