One of the most anticipated launches of the 2024 season is the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4, one of the most popular models in the mixed running shoe market for quality training and competing with great efficiency and dynamism.

In RUNNEA, we tell you all the keys to the success of this new release of the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 running shoes, which reflect a comprehensive update, and are able to improve your performance as a runner both in training and in competition.

All the news and main characteristics of the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4

News and main features: New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4

The leap in quality of this new update of the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 is very significant because it fuses the cushioning of a training shoe, the versatility of a mixed model, and the reactivity of a racing shoe. New Balance's intention seems clear with respect to recovering lost ground, returning to the success of the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v2. This new model improves on its previous New Balance FuelCell Rebel v3, which has gone somewhat unnoticed by the current market.

Of course, one of the keys to the success of these New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 is that they provide a perfect balance between cushioning and stability, without adding extra weight. All this comes from evolved and more reactive FuelCell foam, and a midsole with greater height and a wider platform. The idea is none other than to run more efficiently and safely.

New Balance FuelCell Rebel v44: higher midsole and wider platform

In this sense, the FuelCell Rebel v4 join the current maximalist trend in the running universe, and the construction of its midsole could have a higher profile, including more height and more foam in its midsole. Although seen the configuration of the renewed New Balance FuelCell Supercomp Trainer v2, this renewal of FuelCell Rebel v4 does not exceed 40 millimeters. On the other hand, this increase in the height of its midsole geometry responds to one of the demands that loyal fans of New Balance have made: to ensure that its exclusive, lightweight and reactive full-length FuelCell foam does not offer that sinking feeling as the kilometers go by. But, of course, maintaining the essence of soft, comfortable, light and agile footsteps.

It also features a significant redesign of its upper. This part of the shoe seems to include a better reinforced and more consistent engineered technical mesh with FantomFit technology to increase its resistance, while maintaining its great fit and support. The idea is to avoid premature tears and to better adapt the model to the natural movements of the foot.

These New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 shoes are ready to offer you an unprecedented running experience.

Type of runner of the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4

Type of runner: New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4

Despite all the changes they bring with them, what does not change is the profile of runner to which these New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 are best for. We are talking about a runner with a neutral stride and light to intermediate weight up to 75 kilos in running shoes for men, and up to 65 kilos in running shoes for women.

These FuelCell Rebel v4 are lightweight daily training shoes designed for fast and long distance running. They are perfect for short interval sets, quality sets, and for easy long distance runs at more controlled and gentle paces. They handle very well at all types of paces from 4:30 min/km, and faster.

New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4, mixed running shoe

However, it is important to point out that these New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 do not include a carbon plate, unlike the New Balance FuelCell SC Elite v4, so it is more of a more conventional mixed shoe, and does not include a rocker.

All in all, if your preference is for combination of lightness, comfort and speed, don't hesitate any longer, these New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 are the running shoes you are looking for.

New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4: the perfect shoe for agile workouts and even racing

The first thing I want to tell you is that I am in love with New Balance's FuelCell Rebel saga. It has been a love that has been growing with the passing of the different versions. But I'm going to try to explain to you why I have this love for this saga and for what kind of runner profile I would recommend these running shoes from the Boston-based company, New Balance.

But first I would like to do a little retrospective about the saga. I had the great fortune of being able to attend the world premiere of the first New Balance FuelCell Rebel in Brooklyn in 2019. In that experience we were able to test the great performance of a first model that already stood out in a half marathon. However, it had points of improvement, one of the most important: the aesthetic section.

The only version I could not test was the Rebel v2 but I could have them again in version 3. This version 3 that was released between the end of 2022 and 2023 was for me one of the big surprises of the season. It was a very stable, fast, comfortable and cushioned model.

The perfect shoe for agile training and even for racing.

And if I had to give it any buts, it was that aesthetically they were very average. That shoe that I recommended when I was asked about it but it didn't catch anyone's attention... until the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 arrived.

New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 Runner Profile

First I will tell you who, in my opinion, is the ideal runner for this model. Until version 3 I would not have recommended them for runners weighing more than 85 kilos, but this version 4 has even more cushioning and stability than the previous versions, and at practically the same weight. This model weighs 194 grams in women's size 38 and 216 grams in men's size 43, a weight almost in line with the fastest carbon plate models of the big brands.

The New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 will work very well in any training, almost at any pace because they are very agile. It is also a shoe that you can wear with guarantees in many races, and that only the models of carbon plate shoes would surpass in speed.

What I liked most about the New Balance FueCell Rebel v4

Improved design

One of the things I liked most about these new New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 is the aesthetics. New Balance has created a very nice design line that resembles its "big" sisters, the New Balance Supercomp Elite v4 or the New Balance FuelCell Supercomp Trainer v2. In fact, the previous line of the Rebel was very similar to the Propel saga and now they have decided to make it more radical and more similar to those fast shoes of the American company.

Improved mesh

In recent years, all the technology related to the mesh of running shoes has been greatly improved. In this case we have a mesh with "Fantomfit" technology that is very breathable but quite reinforced.

Let me explain. It is not a mesh throughout the upper of the shoe, as the heel is covered. This gives us more stability.

And in the mid and forefoot area of our foot we do have a microperforated mesh but with much more density than other meshes we see in the market. This has the positive side that it makes it more robust, more durable, but for the very demanding, it can penalize a little bit in breathability section. Personally, I have found them to be very good in this area as well.

Cushioning

One of the things I like the most about the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 is the cushioning. The FuelCell technology in the midsole provides a really smooth running experience. Every stride feels more efficient thanks to the high energy return it provides. When running in these shoes, I notice how the cushioning absorbs the impact of landing and propels me forward. This not only improves performance, but also helps me reduce fatigue, allowing me to train longer and more effectively.

Stability

Stability has been an area where I have noticed a significant improvement. The FuelCell Rebel v4 offer improved support, something especially beneficial for heavier runners. The best part is that this extra stability is achieved without significantly increasing the weight of the shoe, keeping it light and nimble. During my runs, the extra stability gives me a more secure footing, helping to prevent injuries.

Speed

The lightness and agility of the FuelCell Rebel v4 make them perfect for improving my times. Their streamlined design and FuelCell technology not only provide effective cushioning, but also contribute to quick response.

This combination makes the Rebel v4 ideal for my intense workouts and competitions, giving me outstanding performance at any pace.

Possible points for improvement

I have noticed that the outsole has a very slick area that is feeling the effects of wear faster than expected. This wear could affect the overall durability of the shoes, which is a point to keep in mind if you're looking for a pair that will hold up for many miles without issue.

Models similar to the New Balace FuelCell Rebel v4

There are many models in other brands that compete in the segment of the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4, but I have to tell you that these are one of my favorites. To name a few other models I could tell you about the PUMA Velocity Nitro 3, the Nike Vomero 17 or the ASICS Novablast 4

New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 Final Conclusions

In summary, the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 excels in several key aspects that make it an excellent choice for a wide range of runners. Advanced cushioning, enhanced stability, quickness and an attractive design combine to deliver a shoe that meets the demands of training and racing. While there is room for improvement in outsole durability, the overall advantages make the Rebel v4 a standout choice in the running shoes market.

New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4: Dynamism and comfort in every stride

The New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 have completely changed and it seems that this time they are here to stay and become a bestseller of the American brand. This new model has been renewed in a daring way, keeping the Rebel spirit that we already knew and many even loved. The Rebel has always been synonymous with fast and light shoes, and this version is no exception. If you've ever tried any of its previous versions, you know it's a special shoe. The FuelCell Rebel v4 promises you a running experience full of dynamism and comfort. So where's the change? You say... Let's take a look at it because it will surprise you.

Main technical features

The New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 stands out for several reasons. Let's start with the FuelCell midsole, which remains the undisputed protagonist. This compound provides reactive cushioning and energy return that you feel with every stride. The combination of EVA and PEBA (80% and 20% respectively) ensures a perfect balance between softness and dynamism. The midsole looks like it was sculpted by Norman Foster himself, with strategic cutouts and recesses that not only enhance performance, but also add an aesthetic touch.

The technical mesh upper has been redesigned to offer increased breathability and a more comfortable fit. The inclusion of FantomFit technology enhances structured support without compromising ventilation. This combination results in an upper that fits the foot like a glove, keeping it cool and secure throughout the run.

The NDurance rubber outsole has been enhanced with an all-new rubber pattern designed to offer superior traction and durability. This design ensures that the shoes performs exceptionally well on a variety of surfaces, providing a smooth and quick transition.

Weight-wise, the Rebel v4 remains lightweight at approximately 213 grams (size 9), making it ideal for runners looking for speed without compromising comfort. The 6 mm drop and midsole height of 28 mm in the heel and 215 mm in the forefoot ensure a natural and efficient stride.

Running sensations

Running with the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 is a revitalizing experience. From the very first moment, you notice the reactivity of the FuelCell midsole, providing a boost with every step. The cushioning is firm yet comfortable, allowing you to maintain fast paces without feeling premature fatigue. This combination of cushioning and reactivity makes the Rebel v4 ideal for intense workouts and competitions.

The technical mesh upper adapts perfectly to the foot, offering a secure fit without being restrictive. The breathability of the material is excellent, keeping feet cool even on long runs and in hot conditions. The NDurance rubber outsole provides reliable traction, ensuring stability in every stride.

The lightness of these shoes is one of their strong points, allowing a feeling of freedom and speed that is appreciated both in training and competition. The transition from heel to toe is smooth and efficient, facilitating a more natural and less tiring running technique.

Ideal runner type

The New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 is designed for a runner profile that seeks speed and performance without sacrificing comfort. They are ideal for light to medium weight runners who want a versatile shoe for fast training and racing. They are also suitable for runners looking to improve their times in 5K to half marathon races.

This model is perfect for those who value a quick response and a brisk stride. If you are a runner who enjoys interval sessions, fartleks and fast runs, the FuelCell Rebel v4 will be an excellent addition to your shoes arsenal.

Distances and terrains

The New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 is designed primarily for running on asphalt and paved surfaces. Their responsiveness and light weight make them ideal for short to medium distances, from 5K to half marathon. They can also work well in races up to half marathon for more experienced and lighter runners.

Thanks to their NDurance rubber outsole, they also offer good performance on packed dirt roads and light trails. However, it is true that they are not the best option for dirt or rocky trails because you will feel in the sole of your foot almost every little stone you find on the way.

What we liked most about the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4

  • FuelCell midsole: Provides responsive cushioning and impressive energy return, making every stride feel faster and more efficient.
  • Technical mesh upper: Offers a secure and comfortable fit, creating a feeling that your feet are locked in but not restricted. The breathability of the material ensures your feet stay cool even on the longest, hottest runs.
  • NDurance rubber outsole: Provides exceptional traction and durability, ensuring the shoes withstand daily wear and tear and offer excellent traction on a variety of surfaces.
  • Lightweight feel: Extremely lightweight, yet the comfort and feel good with every stride.

Opportunities for improvement

  • Upper durability: Some runners have reported that the mesh can wear out over time, especially in heavy use conditions. Additional reinforcement in key areas could increase the life of the upper.
  • Wet performance: Grip and traction in the dry are exceptional, but in wet conditions, especially on painted surfaces such as crosswalks, they can be slippery.
  • Heel lock: Although heel support has improved, it can still be a weak point for some runners, especially those with a more aggressive stride.
  • Weight sensitivity: Runners weighing more than 80 kg may find the cushioning insufficient, feeling the asphalt more than desired.

Rivals

Hoka Rincon 4: Balance between excellent cushioning and lightness.

Saucony Ride 17: We like them for their balance of responsive cushioning, comfort and durability.

Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 2: They stand out for their speed and performance.

Brooks Hyperion 2: Another example of a lightweight, responsive shoe.

The New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 has taken all the elements we loved about its predecessors and improved upon them. Their lightweight, snug design ensures a comfortable and fast running experience, perfect for short to medium distances as well as intensive training sessions. The combination of the FuelCell midsole, technical mesh upper and NDurance rubber outsole makes these shoes a top choice for runners who value speed and efficiency.

While there are areas that could be improved, such as upper durability and wet performance, the advantages of the FuelCell Rebel v4 far outweigh these negative points. If you're looking for a shoe that will help you improve your times and enjoy a fast, comfortable run, the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 is an excellent choice FuelCell Rebel v4
