New Balance FuelCell Summit Unknown SG

This time I bring you the unknown new version of the "New Balance FuelCell Summit Unknown" shoes in its SG version. When you take a look at the outsole, you immediately notice a big change, as it features approximately 6.5 mm lugs. These shoes have an attractive look, with quality finishes and a comfortable initial feel thanks to the breathable and reinforced bootie design. The perfect combination is found in the star element of its midsole: the FuelCell, which stands out for its reactivity and cushioning.

When you put them on, you realize that they are suitable for runners with narrow feet, as the middle part of the shoe narrows considerably, thus offering good grip.

One feature I really like is the focus on the construction of the upper, where more than 50% of the materials used are sustainable, either recycled or environmentally friendly. In addition, between a 3 and a 5% of the outsole materials also meet these sustainable criteria.

The sole of the New Balance FuelCell Summit Unknown SG makes a big difference compared to its sister version, the New Balance FuelCell Summit Unknown, which you can find in my previous review. The presence of the Hesion Hydro outsole raises the lug height to 6.5mm, 15 higher than the regular version, and features a different design that improves grip on various hilly surfaces, especially on dry and even more slippery terrain. It is also important to note the inclusion of a Rock Stop plate, which protects the foot on rocky terrain.

During a test of approximately 20 km in mud and wet terrain, I could see that, compared to the v4 Summit Unknown, its grip is somewhat more limited on wet stones and wet root zones. However, I must highlight its good performance when running in muddy areas.

Inside the shoe, we find a removable and cushioned insole that fulfills its function adequately, avoiding water retention. Undoubtedly, these shoes leave a good initial impression.

New Balance FuelCell Summit Unknown SG Trail Runner Profile

The SGSummit Unknown is designed for runners with solid technique and high paces. It is especially oriented to short runs of up to 20 km, offering its maximum performance on dry and technical trails, and even on muddy terrain, thanks to its 65 mm heel that fulfills its function of providing grip.

It is important to note that this shoe is ideal for runners with narrow feet, as it offers an optimal and secure fit.

With this shoe, you will be able to make the most of your technical skills and maintain a fast pace in your training sessions or short distance races.

What I liked most about the New Balance FuelCell Summit Unknown SG

This New Balance FuelCell Summit Unknown SG stands out especially in two areas: its performance in high-pace runs on technical trails and muddy terrain with improved grip thanks to its deep lugging. It also offers excellent breathability, which helps keep feet cool during activity. Its FuelCell technology provides responsiveness and remarkable comfort with every stride.

The laces, with a stretchy look, fit securely without the risk of untying. If you're looking for a fast shoe for training or short runs, the New Balance FuelCell Summit Unknown SG may be perfect for you. It's also noteworthy that a big brand like New Balance cares about sustainability by trying to incorporate eco-friendly elements into their products, which is noteworthy.

Opportunities for improvement in the New Balance FuelCell Summit Unknown SG

After testing these shoes for almost 100 km, it can be seen that their grip on wet surfaces, such as rocks or roots, is less than that of the Summit v4. Although the reinforcement in the heel area fulfills its function by protecting against stones and branches, in very steep descents it can be uncomfortable. This will mean that in certain downhill sections you will have to be more cautious. In addition, it is important to mention that the last of these shoes is narrow in the middle part, and it is not possible to request a model with a wider last.

Direct rivals of the New Balance FuelCell Summit Unknown SG

One of the possible rivals may be the New Balance FuelCell Summit Unknown v4, gaining in cushioning the New Balance FuelCell Summit Unknown SG, but losing a point of flexibility.

Final Conclusion on the New Balance FuelCell Summit Unknown SG

These shoes have an attractive design and offer comfort over short distances, as well as excellent grip on dry and muddy terrain, although they may lose grip on wet surfaces such as rocks or roots. When running at high speed, there is adequate cushioning and a lightweight feel.

They are ideal for fast training and races up to medium distance.

In summary, these shoes are recommended for technical and fast runners, and excel at distances up to mid-distance.
