The seventh edition of the Downshifter from Nike comes with some changes in relation to its predecessors, mainly when it comes to design, although they have also received some updates in cushioning and traction to make them more versatile. With this design twist, the Nike Downshifter 7 becomes a shoe to start running, but also adapts to other sporting practices and even as a casual sneaker.

Nike

With its 12mm drop the shoe remains in the maximalist category and despite the change in design, the weight remains the same as the previous edition, with 265 grams in the men's version, making it a lightweight shoe in which cushioning is unquestionable.

Upper design

Nike

The upper unit continues to implement a highly breathable mesh in the front section of the shoe, but this time the synthetic toe cap has been removed to give more coverage to the mesh and make the upper softer and more flexible.

Nike

The synthetic sidewall design has been modified to a single-layer print with hexagonal-shaped holes that allow air to flow into the shoe while providing better structure to the sidewall.

This material is bonded directly to the holes in the lacing system for a customized fit.

The collar of the Nike Downshifter 7 shoe also gets a change, with a lower design that better fits the contours of the ankle and using a more cushioned material than the previous edition. The tongue is now larger and padded for better closure and comfort.

The internal insole is made of a molded rubber and allows for an additional layer of protection and cushioning between the foot and the midsole of the shoe to add extra support to the sole.

Cushioning

Nike

The cushioning system continues to be provided by Phylon rubber, a proprietary compound made from high quality materials that prevent the midsole from breaking down easily or losing its integrity. This rubber is able to offer a good level of cushioning, energy return and support suitable for a wide variety of activities to which the shoe is subjected, from running, to take them to the gym.

Outsole

Nike

The outsole of these shoes is another area that comes with changes from the previous edition. A rubber compound is used for the outsole which extends in a single length across the entire surface; this material offers great abrasion resistance without adding additional weight to the shoe.

The design of the soles has been modified to improve the flexibility of the shoe by choosing different patterns for each section of the foot, improving grip and propulsion. A deep groove extends throughout the entire midsole section to promote natural foot flexibility, allowing the foot to move and bend without the sole being restrictive.

Some lugs have been strategically placed in some sections of the outsole. The lugs of the Nike Downshifter 7 are less prominent than those of the predecessor shoe, but functional enough to provide traction on asphalt terrain and on some surfaces such as trails.

The Downshifter 7 promises an enhanced running experience for runners with a neutral or supination-prone footprint, exceptional cushioning, and resilience in a variety of running situations or for other sporting activities.
