Video Nike Zegama 2

Nike remains dedicated to advancing and enhancing its offerings in the realm of mountaineering. A prime illustration of this commitment is evident in the upcoming models for the 2024 season, such as the Nike Zegama 2, slated for release in May 2024, catering to mountain running enthusiasts.

The Nike Zegama 2 trail running shoes pay homage to one of the most esteemed international races, signifying Nike's steadfast dedication to the mountains.

Main features of the Nike Zegama 2

Retaining its avant-garde aesthetic from its predecessor, the Nike Zegama 2 trail running shoes from Nike boast top-tier materials and technologies, promising a highly anticipated upgrade. While maintaining its overall appearance and structure, the model focuses on enhancing key aspects for an improved finish.

The shoe introduces a lighter mesh upper compared to the Nike ZoomX Zegama, designed to snugly accommodate runners' feet while ensuring flexibility. Featuring a single-layer mesh construction with added instep lining for enhanced breathability and rain drainage.

Equipped with Nike ZoomX technology in the midsole, the Nike Zegama 2 offers exceptional energy return, ideal for long-distance running. The revamped midsole introduces the sturdier and more durable SR02 support, safeguarding the soft foam from external elements while maintaining desired cushioning and stability.

The shoe debuts a brand-new Vibram Megagrip outsole, elevating traction, stability, and durability against external elements encountered on trails. Customized through collaboration with Vibram, the outsole features new multidirectional lugs inspired by Nike's original Waffle design, providing enhanced traction on various terrains.

Nike Zegama 2 Runner Profile

Catering to runners of average weight, the Nike Zegama 2 is ideal for those weighing between 80-85 kilograms, delivering efficiency in racing. A versatile model capable of supporting competitive paces while offering comfort during leisure runs.

Technical specifications of the Nike Zegama 2

Weighing 320 grams in the men's version and 264 grams in the women's version, the shoe maintains a 4mm drop with varying profiles: the men's version features 36mm rear and 32mm front profiles, while the women's version has slightly reduced measurements (35mm rear / 31mm front).

A highly adaptable model suitable for compact, slippery, or technical terrains, embodying the essence of a Zegama experience. Versatility meets endurance, allowing runners to traverse miles without compromising on comfort or performance.

Nike Zegama 2: Quality leap that lives up to its name

At RUNNEA, we set ourselves a challenge to match the shoes we were planning to test. We named it the Zegama RUNNEA x Top4Running project. Members of the RUNNEA Trail Team, in collaboration with Top4Running, traveled to the town of Zegama. The goal was clear: to rigorously test the Nike Zegama 2 in a challenging environment. The day we chose could not have better epitomised the harsh conditions of the legendary Zegama race, complete with rain, cold, fog, and plenty of mud, providing the perfect setting to thoroughly evaluate a shoe that otherwise performs exceptionally well. This is the trail shoe for running in Zegama.

Exploring the Nike Zegama 2

The Zegama 2 has undergone significant improvements. The initial version faced criticism for not being suitable for the harsh conditions typical of a race like the one in Gipuzkoa. In response, the American company has put considerable effort into developing a second version that lives up to expectations.

Upper

The upper of the Nike Zegama 2 has been redesigned with a focus on both comfort and safety. The new mesh fabric not only reduces weight but also enhances breathability and drainage. The lacing area has been revamped to offer a better fit and improved protection, featuring flaps or 'wings' on both sides of the eyelets. The tongue has been made more padded, and more attention has been given to protecting the heel area, ensuring a snug fit. The sock-like design helps prevent debris such as loose stones or mud from entering the shoe. The durability of the upper remains to be seen.

Midsole

The midsole features Nike's ZoomX technology, shielded by an external capsule to increase its durability. It delivers excellent energy return, making it ideal for long distances over mountainous terrain. This capsule, referred to as SR02, enhances both durability and stability, safeguarding the foam from the elements and the rugged terrain.

Outsole

The most significant and acclaimed update is the incorporation of the Vibram Megagrip outsole. We are particularly impressed with this outsole; it significantly improves traction and stability on slippery and muddy surfaces, and provides very reliable grip with each step. The new multidirectional lugs, equipped with spike-like features inspired by Nike’s historic Waffle design, offer excellent traction across a variety of terrains, as demonstrated in Zegama.

We tested the Nike Zegama 2 in Zegama

We were able to test the new Zegama 2 in extreme conditions. Rain, mud, fog and, of course, cold. The test left us with a very good feeling, with a sole that lived up to expectations. The Vibram Megagrip provides security even in the most slippery terrain, as when leaving the cave near Sancti Spiritu.

For what type of trail runners do we recommend the Nike Zegama 2?

The Nike Zegama 2 has been engineered with trail runners of nearly any weight in mind, aiming to provide stability, reactivity, and protection without sacrificing speed and agility. These shoes excel on technical and variable terrain, delivering performance that has exceeded our expectations.

Strengths and areas for improvement

What we liked the most

  • Vibram Megagrip Outsole: exceptional traction in adverse conditions.
  • Nike ZoomX Technology: efficient energy return and superior cushioning.
  • Versatile design: You'll be able to use it in different terrains and conditions.

Potential areas for improvement

  • Durability of the upper: if you run in very technical areas, this can become compromised over time.
  • We would have liked some more protection in the toe area. A rubber piece that protected the toes in the initial prototype of the Zegama 2 has been removed.

The Nike Zegama 2 marks significant progress in Nike’s line of trail shoes. It includes major enhancements that make it suitable for various types of terrain and weather conditions. Tested in the rugged environment of Zegama, these shoes not only endured the challenging conditions but excelled with distinction. They provided both security and comfort, making them an excellent choice for those seeking a versatile, comfortable, and responsive trail shoe.
