1 / 4

New member of Sauconys Endorphin flying family, but with great incentives to keep an eye on. The new Saucony Endorphin Edge arrives with the label of being the first trail running shoe of the American brand, which includes the coveted carbon plate in its midsole. A reference and pioneer, of which we tell you all its expectations in RUNNEA.

I don't know why it gives us, but we believe that these Saucony Endorphin Edge will mark a before and after in the mountain terrain segment. And the fact is that the fastest trail runners already have at their disposal this model that will allow them to move at high paces, but also ensuring adaptability and stability that every trail running shoe needs to cope with the irregularities of the terrain.

Main features of the Saucony Endorphin Edge

Saucony Endorphin Edge main features

In the design and construction of these innovative Endorphin Edge by Saucony, we must valor the joint work carried out by the famous Massachusetts firm with the company Carbitex, leaders in the manufacture of carbon fibers. The result is an innovative carbon fiber plate, which is curved and Y-shaped. This technological resource allows the plate to be more flexible at the top, creating a leverage effect that propels you. Its main argument in favor is that the plate is able to adapt to the terrain on which it runs, thanks to its high level of flexibility.

In this particular case, in addition to providing that great adaptability, the design of these Saucony Endorphin Edge also seek to provide the greatest possible efficiency. That is why the Carbitex plate is complemented by a double layer of the star material PWRUN PB to increase the degree of comfort, but also to guarantee the necessary protection for long distances.

Saucony Endorphin Edge, upper

It is also necessary to emphasize that this model of the Saucony Endorphin Edge is designed to help you run fast in the mountains, but it will not work the same as its counterparts on the asphalt of the Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 Saving the notable differences between one type of surface and another, the plate of these Endorphin Edge offer propulsion, but also stability and firmness to run safely in multiple mountain terrains. You won't find the same sensations as the best carbon plate shoes on asphalt, but you will be able to use them to compete with guarantees and improve personal bests in your most demanding mountaineering challenges.

To maintain that feeling of speed and propulsion, the Saucony Endorphin Edge features a lightweight mesh upper for more effective breathability, as moisture inside evaporates faster. While fit and support are guaranteed.

Saucony Endorphin Edge, outsole

On the other hand, the level of protection of these Saucony Endorphin Edge is guaranteed with the exclusive PWRTRAC technology to increase traction and grip on different terrains. The anti-rock plate offers extra protection.

Saucony Endorphin Edge, technical specifications

Saucony Endorphin Edge, specifications

The specifications of these Endorphin Edge from Saucony bring with them a drop of 6 millimeters and a weight of about 255 grams. Regarding the price, the RRP has not been disclosed, but with a carbon fiber plate it can be assumed that we are talking about a top of the range silhouette, and its price will be in line with the size of the model. Probably around 200. Along with The North Face Flight VECTIV, these Saucony Endorphin Edge represent the leap that was also expected in trail running with the arrival of carbon fibers in the midsoles of the fastest shoes.

Saucony Endorphin Edge, the carbon plate comes to the trail

Saucony shoes are synonymous with comfort. The Saucony Peregrine model has been my shoe for a couple of seasons and the Saucony Xodus model accompanied me on some ultradistance trail running.

At first glance the Saucony Endorphin Edge looks nice. It's a pleasure when I wear it because the cushioning sensation is immediate. It is an oversized shoe, very wide, which forces us to tighten the laces well and possibly tighten them again after a few minutes of warm-up. Better with soft socks. Once adjusted to the foot it is easy to start running with them, it is super light in relation to its size and despite the oversized sole, it feels agile and reactive, possibly because it has a carbon plate, the main attraction of this shoe.

Saucony Endorphin Edge

The Saucony Endorphin Edge's ideal terrain type

In the first outing, they have to suffer while tracking in Gorbeia Suzien. On hard terrain, asphalt and track, they work great, light and reactive but never bouncy or soft. On grass they behave well even when wet. The upper is highly breathable and the shoe feels very ventilated. The problems start in the technical areas. The shoe is indeed "big" and on narrow trails with overhangs and rocks it has its limitations. Its Achilles heel is mud and wet rock.

It has lugs of ideal size, shape and distribution but the rounded sole profiles cause the shoe to slide in the presence of mud in an effect similar to aquaplaning; rectangular profiles would be better. On wet rock they simply slip, partly due to the lightening of the sole that leaves two strips of the textile reinforcement fabric in the air; it would be better to cover these elements. When the technical terrain ends, on wider tracks, equally wet and even with loose stones, the shoe is a pleasure and does not retain any water or mud. The feet finish the test very well rested.

Saucony Endorphin Edge

The second test of fire takes place on terrain more suitable for Endorphin Edge, stone and dirt tracks and wide trails. The running sensations are very good, the shoe helps you continuously and I discover the main virtue of this shoe in the mountains. When running fast on trails, in the presence of the usual loose stones and irregularities, even with some humidity, the foot perceives the angle changes but the sole does not allow anything to get stuck in our soles; despite its oversize, it is a stable and protective shoe with good ground feel. To finish, a small scare on a steep passage with some wet stone reminds me again where you have to be careful with these shoes.

After about 100 kilometers, the shoe is quite well preserved except for some pitting in the sole foam, quite soft, possibly a consequence of the outing on rocky terrain.

Saucony Endorphin Edge

Ideal type of runner for the Saucony Endorphin Edge

Recommended for runners of medium or high weight, wide feet, they are also valid for lighter athletes but they will not get as much out of them. They are designed for long or ultra distance running on low to medium technical routes (good tracks and trails), technical or slippery sections are worse for them due to the oversizing. The detail of the rubber to collect the laces is very good.

When it comes to conclusions, the Saucony Edorphin EDGE is an extremely comfortable running shoe, it does not compress at all, with a cushioning that allows to keep the feet rested despite the accumulated kilometers, with a very good stability and an unexpected reactivity for an oversize shoe, thanks to its carbon plate. On the other hand, the oversizing causes people with narrow feet to feel excessive looseness; a slight reduction in width would significantly improve the fit.

Saucony Endorphin Edge

The lightness and ventilation are striking. In the terrain they swallow everything, they behave in a noble way except in greasy terrains where they skid excessively and in wet rock where they will really make us suffer.

This is a shoe designed for long distances due to its extreme comfort (after 3 hours we will notice its advantages) and ideal for wide tracks and trails. They also allow fast running with the exception of the technical limitations already mentioned.
