Good cushioning and a great grip on the outsole are two of the main features of the new Under Armour Sonic Trail, a shoe that will allow us to enjoy our workouts or races in the mountains.

The Under Armour Sonic Trail is a versatile trail running shoe that we can use both for running and walking through a wide range of terrain and mountain trails.

Under Armour Sonic Trail features highlights

Under Armour expands its catalog of shoes designed for mountain running to match, little by little, its extensive catalog of running shoes where it is one of the most prominent American brands.

The upper of the shoe has a lightweight mesh that gives us good protection to run safely in the mountains, it also has additional protections in the toe.

The Under Armour Sonic Trail has a textured print that provides extra structure and stability while running with them, in addition to removing dirt to protect the design of this model.

The shoe has a new molded heel and a higher ankle area to prevent the entry of dirt or small stones that we can find while running on trails or mountain trails.

Also note the presence of two small pullers, one located at the top of the tongue and one on the back of the heel that makes it easier to put on and take off the shoe easily and quickly.

Cushioning is provided by UA HOVR technology that stands out for its reactivity and reduction of impact with the ground, which gives us back more energy and propels us forward in each of our strides.

The shoe features a new outsole design, made with high-traction rubber and higher lugs to provide great grip on a wide variety of surfaces.

Ideal profile of the Under Armour Sonic Trail

This is a versatile shoe that adapts to a wide range of runners, athletes of medium weight, with a neutral stride technique will be able to get the most out of the performance of the shoe.

It is a model that is not designed to run fast in the mountains, rather the opposite, it holds its ground perfectly in medium paces, even slow ones because we can also use it in our walks or routes in the mountains. As for the distances, thanks to its good cushioning we can use it in the middle distance perfectly.

The shoe has one of the most common drops on the market today, specifically 8 mm, so we are assured cushioning and comfort.

In short, we are facing a shoe that, thanks to its cushioning, the great grip of the sole and the protections with which it counts, we can use it in our mountain routes in a wide variety of terrains, even on wet or muddy terrain.

Under Armour Sonic Trail: an ideal shoe for beginners in the world of trail running

The American brand Under Armour stands out mainly for the design and innovation that implements across its range of sportswear, ideal for running or any other sporting activity we tested some time ago. Now we chose the Under Armour Sonic Trail.

These trail running shoes joined us during our last outings in the mountains, we have to say that always in dry conditions so we can not provide data on their grip on wet or muddy terrain. The terrains on which we have run have been very varied, predominantly simple tracks and trails which is where they have behaved best.

First impressions and features of the Under Armour Sonic Trail

The first impression we had, just putting on the shoe, was the very tight fit it has, as it is the same size that I usually use and with which I test all trail shoes and the truth is that the foot feels a higher pressure than other shoes.

We do not use external insoles but it is an aspect to consider according to the morphology of the feet of each athlete and the need you may have to use insoles because you can hardly use them unless you choose a size above the one you are accustomed to normally use.

The upper has a mesh that breathes properly (we have tested them during a time when it has been quite hot) and we highlight the padding with which it has in the heel area that give us comfort and stability when running with the shoes.

The protections are present in the front but not in a very prominent way, so we will suffer a little more if we run on high technical terrain or with abundant stones or small rocks.

The midsole has a reasonable cushioning, ideal to run comfortably in short distances but if we want to run distances beyond the half marathon perhaps it will be a little tight, we do not think it is the shoe of the brand intended for long distances in the mountains.

The outsole has pleasantly surprised us in all the tests we have done, from the simplest terrain to those with a greater slope where it has shown signs of a higher grip than we initially thought. It has a design with large lugs in the rear area and smaller but more numerous lugs in the front, a good combination for both ascents and descents.

What is the trail runner profile of these new Under Armour Sonic Trail?

This is a shoe that does not adapt to all runner profiles, those who have a good running technique and run at high paces on any type of terrain will find it a shoe that falls short, they need a shoe with higher performance.

On the other hand, it is an ideal shoe for those who are new to trail running and / or need a versatile shoe for sports activities, whether running or just walking or trekking that are not very technical or high mountain terrain.

What I liked most about the Under Armour Sonic Trail shoes

We were very pleasantly surprised by its sole, it responds perfectly in a wide range of terrains, even if we want to run on asphalt to reach mountain areas near urban areas, it will not penalize us too much.

We also highlight its versatility, it is a shoe with which we can run at leisurely pace but we can also use it in trekking or mountain walks because it has a good comfort and are lighter than a hiking shoes.

Under Armour Sonic Trail Upgrade Opportunities

The choice of size is always one of the main aspects when buying a shoe, it is highly recommended to try them on whenever possible to see if they fit your foot and, more in the case of this shoe that has a very tight fit, so if it is necessary to introduce external and customized insoles to avoid discomfort and injuries you have to consider this aspect and choose the shoe with larger sizes.

A feature that we always look at trail shoes we test is the lacing system with which it has and whether or not we can save them or protect them in some way to avoid that in the narrowest or complicated trails penalize us. The shoe has a puller but it is below the lacing so it is (almost) impossible to use it in an effective way.

Possible direct rivals of the Under Armour Sonic Trail

In the market there are, increasingly, multipurpose shoes that adapt to different terrains, here we highlight some with similar characteristics to the model tested:

Under Armour Sonic Trail Final Conclusions

The Under Armour Sonic Trail is a versatile trail shoe, comfortable (as long as you choose the right size) and that we can use not only for running but for other sports activities, for this reason it is a shoe recommended for athletes who are starting out and do not need shoes with great technologies or innovations that incorporate the highest quality models (and price).

The reasonable comfort and cushioning and the great behavior of its sole will guarantee a good experience in the mountains as long as it is not for high mountain terrain or excessively technical. In short, a shoe to enjoy our first adventures in the mountains.
