The second version of the Under Armour Fat Tire comes with a major update, the new boot collar that helps keep the ankle area more protected, making the shoes now safer for trail running. Other technical details such as cushioning, durability, traction and comfort remain quite similar to the predecessor shoe, so in this new edition we can expect a good performing and safer shoe.
As we have mentioned the main change in the upper of this shoe is in the construction of the boot collar, which is specifically designed to provide ankle support and to function as a barrier against mud, small stones or loose material that we find along the way.
Complementing the construction of the collar is the Boa Closure System. This system uses a small disc located on the side to tighten the laces more securely. The lacing uses fairly thin laces that allow the shoe to fit securely.
The shoe uses a flexible, lightweight upper material that provides comfortable coverage for the foot. The upper also features a rubber print for increased durability. The Under Armour Fat Tire 2 also uses Under Armour Storm technology which is a lightweight, water-repellent material that provides the shoe with a degree of waterproofing when running in wet terrain.
To maintain an libre environment and to prevent the growth of bacteria inside, the shoe makes use of a Cupron Anti-Fungal Pro Fibers insole. The fibers in this insole are designed to reduce odors and kill 99.9 of the bacteria that cause athlete's foot.
For the midsole, Under Armour Charged Cushioning rubber is used, as in the previous edition. This rubber provides cushioning and durability for the shoe's midsole while efficiently absorbing shock during the landing phase. Another feature is that it provides a high level of energy return for a more responsive stride.
With 8 millimeters of drop the shoe can be categorized as a maximalist shoe, considering that it is designed for trail running. This means that we have a substantial midsole that for some runners may limit the surface feel they expect, although in terms of cushioning it will offer excellent protection from the irregularities of trail terrain.
As with the previous version, the Under Armour Fat Tire 2 uses Michelin Wild Gripper rubber compound in the outsoles. This high-quality technology is inspired by motorcycle tires and features multi-directional lugs that are designed to adapt to the most varied terrain.
The second version of the Fat Tire features a standard size fit in both the men's and women's versions. Both the heel, midfoot and forefoot sizes are standard, which will make runners with medium build feet feel more than comfortable in these shoes. For those with narrow feet, the lacing system allows for a snug midfoot fit, while for runners with wide feet the upper material is quite adaptive for a fit that doesn't feel restrictive.
