1 / 6The sneakers worn by Marty McFly in the movie 'Back to the Future II' have finally become a reality after several years of work. The American brand has just launched the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0 , a self-lacing sneaker. Finally, you won't need to bend over anymore.
These futuristic shoes incorporate a series of sensors that detect the exact moment when you stand up and your heel is correctly positioned inside the sneaker. It is precisely at that moment that they lace up on their own. In addition, two side buttons allow you to adjust the intensity to your liking, through a virtual lacing.
More than a decade of testing
These shoes are the result of in-depth research that combines digital, electronic and mechanical engineering, the result of 11 years of testing and work. Work on the idea began in 2005, and two years later, in 2007, the first prototype was released, but it failed to meet the required expectations.
At first, they took a long time to lace up and were very bulky and stiff, similar to ski boots. In addition, they had to be always plugged in to work, as their battery hardly lasted. Moreover, due to the size of the motor, they were too heavy and noisy.
At the end of 2013, an employee in the innovation and development department discovered a small, lightweight , high-speed motor that could be very durable, suitable for such a sneaker.
Fishing line
As for the cables responsible for tightening and loosening the boots, high-performance materials and Kevlar were tested, but Nike ended up using fishing line, as it provided greater strength and less friction.
After many years of testing and efforts, it seems that Nike has managed to create the shoes worn by Marty McFly in the movie 'Back to the Future II' (1989), although with a more innovative and avant-garde design.
