In the early 1970s, the prestigious American brand Nike had already carved out a niche for itself in the field of tennis. It was not until 1973 that the American brand decided to implement its marketing strategy by introducing four models of high-performance tennis shoes, including the Nike Tennis Classic.
Over the next two decades, some of the best tennis players on the international circuit wore these shoes on the courts, including the very young John McEnroe, who would go on to win several titles in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Forty-three years later, Nike Tennis Classic shoes have been reinvented with a radical makeover. Like the Air Force 1 Ultra Flyknit and Nike Air Presto Ultra Flyknit models, the Nike Tennis Classic Ultra Flyknit fuses a Flyknit upper, which provides breathability and support points where they are most needed, with a molded, flexible outsole. This fusion results in a lightweight and comfortable shoe, with corresponding designs for men and women.
The men's version features a leather Swoosh and inherits the Nike Tennis Classic's heel pull tab from the original model. At the same time, a cork insole gives it a much more svelte and aesthetic touch.
The women's model, meanwhile, debuts a more elaborate, streamlined look with a printed Swoosh, fewer overlays and a higher, more contoured collar.
