ASICS Gel Contend 3

One of the firm's most trusted shoes for neutral runners, ASICS Gel Contend 3 is now in its third edition. In this third version ASICS provides some slight changes to this shoe designed for beginner runners and daily training and makes it more adaptive and comfortable.

The most significant change we will see is the replacement of the synthetic overlays in the upper with less rigid ones than in the previous version; this modification allows the shoe to be lighter and with a softer and more flexible fit for the foot, which offers greater freedom of movement.

The protection in the toe area is not as substantial as in the Asics Contend 2, however this adds points to the flexibility of the shoe, making the overall fit more permissive and more adaptable to the foot.

Upper design

As for the structure of the upper, the use of breathable mesh is maintained which is identical to that of the previous version and can also be seen in other ASICS models. The synthetic overlays are kept, although they are lighter, they allow a good structure and support to the shoe.

The inside of the shoe is kept comfortable thanks to a contoured insole, which is also removable and offers good moisture wicking. Because the shoe is designed for neutral runners, when removing the inner insole there is plenty of room in the shoe for an orthotic insole, so the ASICS Gel Contend 3 can also be adapted to runners with some pronation.

Midsole

The shoe's cushioning comes from a traditional EVA rubber layer, which provides good ground shock absorption and distributes energy to improve stride fluidity.

The gel cushioning system that ASICS uses in other versions of its shoes is also present in the ASICS Gel Contend 3; this technology consists of a silicone-based material, which is placed in the heel section for increased shock absorption.

While there are not many technical features of this shoe in the midsole, its level of cushioning is decent enough for daily training and even for using the shoes casually.

Outsole

The outsole features textured design which provides good durability and adequate level of grip on various types of surfaces. Some flex grooves have been placed closer to the forefoot area and in greater quantity than in the previous edition, to make the transition from heel to toe smoother and better adapt to the natural anatomy of the foot.

Fit

One of the main features of this shoe is its fit, which is medium in the heel and toe areas. The shoes offer good toe room, while the midfoot section is tighter; this quality has been seen since the previous version and while it may take a little longer to break in for some, it allows the laterals to remain secure for neutral runners.

The ASICS Gel Contend 3 is a step up from the previous version, with a shoe that is lighter and more comfortable but maintains its attributes in cushioning and support for those with a passion for running.
