The ASICS Gel Phoenix 8 running shoe arrives with some changes from previous versions, but still remains one of the firm's top choices in mid-range stability shoes.
Designed for runners who tend to pronate, the Phoenix 8 efficiently stops inward foot rotation while maintaining a comfortable ride. While their weight makes them not the first option to consider if you are looking for a speed shoe, they are an interesting option for medium and long distance training thanks to their comfort level.
Unlike the previous version, this time a more flexible mesh has been included that maintains the breathability of the shoe, but allows the foot to move more fluidly. Another aspect that has been improved in this new edition is that the heel section has been simplified to make it less robust, which has also decreased the overall weight of the shoe by eliminating excessive layers of synthetic material.
Upper design
The simplified upper allows the shoe to be lighter; as we mentioned some of the synthetic overlays in the heel area have been removed and the choice this time has been made to place a single reinforcement that keeps the area secure without overly restricting it.
On the sides of the ASICS Gel Phoenix 8 shoes, 3M material is still used which provides structure to the whole shoe and is also reflective, so it improves the runner's visibility when running in low light conditions.
The collar and tongue are generously padded and allow the shoe to close snugly to the foot, this fit is complemented by a traditional lacing system that has been seen since previous editions and which joins the synthetic overlays on the sides to better fit the shoe depending on the width of the runner's foot.
Asics Gel Phoenix 8 Cushioning
Throughout the entire length of the midsole a layer of SpEVA rubber can be found, an improved EVA rubber that optimizes cushioning and contributes to a better transition in the footstrike in the different stages of the running cycle. Underneath this foam is the ASICS Gel system consisting of small silicone capsules placed in the heel and forefoot section which are already known to promote cushioning and efficiently absorb impact energy.
The Duomax support system extends from the heel area to the midfoot on the medial side; this system, based on a dual density foam, reduces pronation in a comfortable way.
Outsole
The outsole of these shoes is quite thick and, as is characteristic of ASICS, the company's proprietary AHAR rubber has been used to reinforce the areas most prone to abrasion, such as the heel. In the forefoot section, a more flexible rubber has been used, but at the same time it provides greater traction.
To add to the flexibility of the rubber, the outsole has deep grooves, mainly in the forefoot section.
All of these technologies incorporated into the ASICS Gel Phoenix 8 have resulted in a very comfortable shoe, with adequate ventilation and effective pronation control, allowing it to be used perfectly during long workouts or competitions where mileage is more important than speed.
