1 / 7RUNNEA introduces you to the new ASICS Novablast 4, which already occupies a prominent place on the shelves of stores specializing in running shoes. Since its debut in 2020, ASICS' Novablast line has experienced a meteoric rise, becoming in just four editions one of the most important models for the Japanese company in the running segment. This rapid growth is a testament to the innovation and quality that ASICS has injected into each release.
The ASICS Novablast 3, for example, was voted the best shoe of 2022 by the RUNNEA community, demonstrating the high level of satisfaction among runners. Now, the Novablast 4 comes with an even stronger focus on sustainability, without sacrificing the dynamic and responsive feel that runners have come to love. This new model seeks to enhance the running experience to the fullest, offering a perfect balance between comfort and performance.
Key features of the ASICS Novablast 4
All of the features that we highlight below about these ASICS Novablast 4 are going to be the ones that make this daily trainingshoe the talk of the town within the running community:

- CO2e label: In an effort to be transparent about their environmental impact, these will be the first Novablast shoes to carry the CO2e label.
- Trampoline-inspired midsole: The midsole has been designed to maximize rebound in each stride, allowing you to run more efficiently. We see a higher rocker that accentuates the feeling of momentum at toe-off.
- Increased grip and durability: The Novablast 4 comes with an outsole that offers exceptional grip on various surfaces, ensuring long-term durability.

- Incorporation of the CO2e label for greater transparency in sustainability.

Another of the new features expected from ASICS Novablast 4 is that it is a more stable model than its previous version. A section that has been one of the points most pointed out as an opportunity for improvement in the ASICS Novablast 3 In this way, the ASICS Novablast 4 may include some type of reinforcement that offers more security in the middle and front of the foot. While in the rearfoot area of the shoe, the heel is likely to feature a more molded structure, improving its support.
On the aesthetic side, these ASICS Novablast 4 are trend-setting and follow the line we have already seen in the ASICS Nimbus 25 and the ASICS Cumulus 25. That is, presenting an upper with a technical stretch knitted mesh, which is made from recycled materials. All this ensures an optimal degree of breathability and a more enveloping design that improves fit. It also makes the model easier to put on and take off.
Speaking of the upper of the Novablast 4, another option that should not be highlighted is the design of its tongue, which is lighter than in previous versions to reinforce the idea of being a lighter model.

Review of ASICS Novablast 4
Our testers tell you their opinion:
Gorka Sedano
TesterPros
- The balance between cushioning and reactivity is a marvel.
- Modern and very attractive design
- One shoe for everything
Cons
- Subtle changes with the Novablast 3
- They lose some dynamism, although they gain cushioning
Asics Novablast 4: Few changes but more stability and comfort
The Asics Novablast 4 arrives with the complicated mission of improving a shoe that was considered in 2022 as the best shoe of the year for RUNNEA users throughout Europe. After running with them for more than 150 km and attending the official presentation of the shoe at the Asics headquarters in Madrid, I bring you my conclusions. Will they manage to surpass their predecessors, the Asics Novablast 3? Let's find out.
Ideal type of runner: For a versatile runner.
The Novablast 4 is ideal for runners with a neutral stride or those of you with a corrective insole who are looking for a lightweight, fun, cushioned shoe. They are perfect for those of you who run 1 or 2 days a week to clear your head, or for those of you who are looking for a second pair of shoes in your rotation for training and running at medium to easy paces. You will be able to use them for competition, from a 10k to a marathon, if you prioritize comfort with a certain dynamism. And for training sessions, from running to series at not excessively brisk paces. Novablast 4 are ideal for runners looking for a dynamic, versatile and stable shoe.
Design and aesthetics
At first glance, the Novablast 4 maintain the modern and attractive aesthetics of Novablast 3, but with updates to the shape of the midsole and upper, offering a more refined and contemporary look. The colors we have seen so far are electric and monochrome. We are sure that as the months go by we will see new designs, as happened with the Asics Novablast 3.
The best of the shoe, its midsole.
One of the most notable updates to the Novablast 4 is the introduction of FF Blst + ECO foam in the midsole. Although visually on the shoes it simply reads FFBlast+, it is actually FFBlast+ ECO. The ECO variant of this foam integrates 20% materials from renewable sources, specifically from waste left over from sugar cane processing. This shift reflects the current trend among running brands towards more sustainable and "green" practices, an aspect increasingly valued by consumers aware of the environmental impact of their choices.
It is not only the composition of the midsole that has evolved in Novablast 4, but also their design. The rearfoot area of the midsole features renewed geometries that, together with the new outsole layout, contribute to a smoother stride transition and enhance the "springboard" effect. This feature is key to delivering a more dynamic and efficient running experience, allowing runners to enjoy a greater sense of propulsion.
Comfort and fit
The upper of the Novablast 4 introduces engineered mesh for breathability and a more adaptive fit. The tongue and collar have been redesigned for a more secure and comfortable fit. We are looking for more comfort while running, trying not to lose that sparkle that makes the Novablast range a dynamic shoe that responds when you demand it.
Slightly heavier but more breathable
Although slightly heavier than the Novablast 3, the Novablast 4 offer a more comfortable fit and greater breathability thanks to their redesigned upper.
Outsole
The outsole of the Novablast 4 has been designed to complement the midsole, offering additional cushioning and stability in addition to good grip. The improved outsole construction provides a more dynamic response at toe-off compared to Novablast 3.
Differences from the Asics Novablast 3
- Design: The Novablast 4 maintain the modern aesthetics but with a more refined design.
- Midsole: Optimized foam distribution for better rebound and transition feel.
- Upper: Improved breathability and adaptive fit in Novablast 4.
- Outsole : Improved traction and durability in Novablast 4.
- Versatility: Novablast 4 offer a wider range of use for different types of training.
What I liked most
The combination of comfort and performance, along with significant improvements in stability, breathability and adaptability of the upper, keeps the Novablast 4 as good as they were in their previous version.
Possible points for improvement
Although the improvements are notable, it is true that the search for greater stability makes the Novablast 4 somewhat less dynamic than the previous version. They lose some speed but gain more stability and control in running. It may not please everyone.

TesterPros
- Best combination of cushioning and dynamism
- Comfort and cushioning that are a delight on the run
Cons
- I don't know if I would pay more for the Novablast 4 than the 3
- Very subtle changes
Asics Novablast 4: More protected and stable than 3
The Asics Novablast 4 represents a subtle yet meaningful progression from its predecessors, not so much in the scope of its improvements but in the direction towards which the model is evolving. This evolution brings about notable enhancements in stability, comfort, and fit, albeit at the expense of some versatility and the lively, bouncy sensation characteristic of the Novablast 3. The Novablast 4 shifts focus towards offering a running experience that prioritizes comfort, enhanced stability, and optimized performance at moderate speeds. The design remains visually appealing, with an increased emphasis on sustainability, making the Novablast 4 a compelling choice for everyday runners seeking a dependable shoe for a wide range of paces and distances, suitable for anything from a 10k to a marathon, ideally at paces no faster than 4:30m/km.
While I appreciate the more substantial feel of the Novablast 4, it prompts me to ponder the positioning of the Asics Cumulus 25, as the Novablast begins to closely resemble it.
The running experience provided by the Novablast 4 remains highly satisfying. Donning the shoes gives a noticeable sense of elevation, coupled with considerable comfort. The cushioning is slightly firmer yet remains quite accommodating. The evolution of this line over just four years is truly remarkable, showcasing incredible growth and improvement. The Novablast 4 stands as a reliable choice, underlining its status as a safe investment for runners.

ASICS Novablast 4: More stable, more cushioned, less fast
The ASICS Novablast 4 has become one of my favorite shoes of 2024. They don't change too much on the aesthetic side but in the concept of the model and where they are headed. After testing them extensively, I can say that these shoes have improved in many aspects, although they still have some weak points compared to the previous model and some pending improvement for the ASICS Novablast 5
What I liked the most
Comfort of the upper: The inside of the upper of the Novablast 4 is noticeably more comfortable compared to the previous versions. The materials used offer a more precise fit, which translates into a more comfortable feel, especially over longer distances. This improvement is evident from the first use, providing a feeling of being well protected without sacrificing comfort.
Outsole grip on dry asphalt: The outsole has undergone a marked improvement in terms of grip. ASICS has effectively fixed the traction issues of previous versions. Although in the wet it still has problems. Probably the main area of improvement in this edition.
Versatility: This shoe is ideal for daily workouts. It is lightweight and well cushioned, offering the protection needed for a variety of workouts. Its ability to adapt to different paces and types of workouts makes it a versatile option for runners looking for a multi-purpose model.
Stability: The Novablast 4 is more solid and reinforced than its predecessors. This more robust construction contributes to greater stability, which is beneficial for a wider range of runners. The wider base and protruding heel provide a more stable platform, reducing the instability that plagued previous versions.
Suitable for longer distances: This new version offers greater control, making it more suitable for longer distances. The improved cushioning and increased stability are ideal for marathons and long runs. The feeling of underfoot protection remains constant even in the final kilometers of a race.
Possible points for improvement
Loss of dynamism: At faster paces, the Novablast 4 shows a loss of "punch" or reactivity. It is not as fast as the Novablast 3. Although it is still suitable for most workouts.
Weight increase: The Novablast 4 is somewhat heavier than its predecessor. This weight increase is offset by the increased stability and cushioning, but it is an aspect to consider.
Internal competition: With a Novablast more oriented towards running, classic models like the ASICS Cumulus seem to lose their spot.
Wet outsole: Still a weak point. If you run in wet conditions, the grip is not good.
Running with the ASICS Novablast 4
From the first use, the ASICS Novablast 4 proved to be an excellent choice for varied workouts. We tested them over 100 kilometers, including easy outings, moderate paced runs, intense workouts and a 10k race. In all these situations, the Novablast 4 convinced me with a combination of comfort and good performance.
Stability is one of the most improved aspects of this version. The base is wider and the heel area also supports the foot better, providing a more stable platform, which significantly reduces the feeling of instability. This improvement is very evident on varied terrain and when making sharp turns.
Flyte Foam Blast + ECO midsole: The midsole incorporates the Flyte Foam Blast + ECO compound, which offers a fairly soft cushioning. This material is the same one we are going to see in models in higher theories like the ASICS Gel Nimbus 26 or the Gel Kayano 30. I like the excellent shock absorption and smooth transitions. The foam compression is controlled, which reduces the sinking feeling and improves stability.
Paces and dynamism: While it's true that the Novablast 4 has lost some sparkle at faster paces, it's still a great shoe for most workouts. During moderate paced sessions and long runs, the shoe offers comfortable cushioning and a nice feel. However, at higher race paces, the response can feel a bit chewy.
Woven Upper: The new Woven upper is more elastic and offers a better fit. However, breathability is compromised, which can be a drawback in hot climates. The inner material is plush and comfortable, similar to that used in the Nimbus 25, and provides a secure and comfortable fit.
Outsole and traction: It is true to say that the outsole of the Novablast 4 has improved in terms of traction and durability. The new low-density AHAR rubber offers better grip on asphalt but remains unconvincing in wet conditions. The outsole structure and rubber geometries provide additional cushioning and durability.
Ideal distances
The ASICS Novablast 4 can be used over a wide range of distances, including marathons. The increased stability and cushioning will allow you to run longer distances. The front rocker is more pronounced and provides a smoother transition, improving efficiency on higher volume runs.
