Mizuno has clearly embraced the concept of crafting shoes that combine peak performance for runners with environmentally conscious and sustainable manufacturing practices. The Mizuno Wave Neo Wind stands as a prime example of this approach. This model incorporates as much as 60% of its materials from recycled or sustainable materials. Undoubtedly, this aligns with a growing trend that major brands are increasingly adopting. Moreover, for each pair of this model sold, Mizuno, in partnership with the National Forest Foundation, pledges to plant two trees. However, the Mizuno Wave Neo Wind surpasses the boundaries of being merely an eco-friendly shoe. It serves as a trendsetter, propelling the Japanese brand into a prominent position. We are talking about a road running shoe for neutral-gait runners but with good support for when fatigue sets in and we lose running technique. It is a model with good cushioning, a soft touch, but with an added touch of reactivity thanks to the combination of 2 foams in its midsole and the incorporation of its successful Wave Plate. Mizuno has found the sought-after equilibrium among runners: comfort, cushioning, and responsiveness, which coupled with a 12 mm drop will delight heel strikers.
The Mizuno Wave Neo Wind is suitable for light to medium-weight runners. Men up to 80 kg and women up to 70 kg will find comfort in its soft feel while still accessing that extra burst of speed when needed. In essence, it's a highly versatile shoe, suitable for various training types, including steady runs, quality workouts, interval training, hill runs, and more. It's equally adept for competition, particularly for races of medium distances. The balance it strikes between speed and foot support is commendable.
The shoe features a supportive heel that effectively curbs unwanted movements during running. The Wave Plate further contributes to foot support throughout the gait cycle.
In terms of pacing, the Mizuno Wave Neo Wind slots comfortably between 4 to 5 min/km.
The innovation in its midsole draws primary attention, incorporating three noteworthy elements. The midsole comprises two distinct foams and the Wave Plate. Worth noting is that this plate isn't carbon-based but instead consists of a plasticised material derived from castor oil. The upper features the MIZUNO ENERZY Lite foam, a lightweight foam, while the MIZUNO ENERZY foam resides beneath the Wave Plate, enhancing reactivity.
The upper is made in one piece, with an integrated tongue. It gives the feeling of a double skin, like putting on a sock. In addition, the upper is made of undyed, white knitted fabric, saving 100% of the water used in the traditional dyeing process. It gives us a great fit and comfortable feeling while running.
The outsole is another of its strengths. With rubber made from algae. Comprised of algae-based rubber, it covers the entire metatarsal area and features a series of wave-like grooves, ensuring both grip and durability. This same material is also utilised in the divided heel area, exposing the central part through an indented section, where the Wave Plate becomes visible.
An additional highlight is the shoe's weight. It weighs in at 255 grams for a US men's size 9.5 (size 8.5 UK) or 220 grams for a US women's size 7 (size 5 UK). The initial price for the Mizuno Wave Neo Wind starts at 165 GBP, though, as always, we recommend comparing prices on RUNNEA before making a purchase.
