Mizuno Wave Ultima 15

When my trusty Ultima 14s were nearing retirement, my running partner Gorka suggested I give the Mizuno Wave Ultima 15 running shoes a try. I was thrilled for two reasons: my satisfaction with the previous edition and my curiosity to explore the enhancements in the new model.

I used these during my training sessions in preparation for the Schneider Electric Paris Marathon 2024. I accumulated a little more than 250 kilometres with them, so I think I can give an informed opinion.

Let's get down to business!

First impressions of the Mizuno Wave Ultima 15

Upon unboxing, I noticed that the model shares many similarities with its predecessor. It's a blue shoe, albeit with a more subdued tone. Despite the similarities with the Ultima 14, I prefer this model. The various shades of blue create visual harmony, and the lime-coloured Wave plate adds a nice contrast.

The mesh appears meticulously crafted to offer both comfort and breathability. Plus, the elastic and flat laces are a personal favourite of mine.

It doesn't take me long to put on the Mizunoshoes to see the first sensations. Everything feels like a glove, I take a few steps and confirm that the Mizuno foams continue to provide the comfort I expect for running.

I kept them on throughout the day to let them mold to my feet before testing them during my afternoon workout.

Ideal runner type of the Mizuno Wave Ultima 15

That afternoon, I embarked on a recovery run. As I jogged, I focused on the sensations the shoes provided, and one word came to mind: comfort. Everything seems tailored for it, from the mesh upper to the outsole with reliable traction, to the midsole featuring Mizuno Enerzy and Wave plate. It's a well-balanced shoe where nothing feels out of place.

I used them for various sessions, including long, easy runs, tempo runs, and fartleks. While I experimented with them during speed workouts, it's not where they shine brightest.

Similar to their predecessors, the Mizuno Wave Ultima 15 caters to:

1. light-medium weight runners looking for a shoe for recovery runs, long runs or races,
2. heavier runners for whom comfort and safety are key.

In terms of distance, the Wave Ultima 15 excels in providing cushioning for long runs. They can handle shorter distances too, as long as the pace is moderate.

You can pick up the pace a bit with them, but they truly shine when utilized for their intended purposes. However, if you only have one pair and you're a versatile runner, they can suffice for all types of training. You'll have ample time to acquire another pair of Mizuno shoes for faster, more explosive workouts.

I refrain from discussing specific paces as they're relative. What might be a recovery jog for some could be a steady pace for others. At these paces, some runners will find these shoes suitable, while others may feel more comfortable at a slightly slower pace.

What I liked the most

While I've labelled the Wave Ultima 15 as training shoes, they're quite versatile and could be your go-to pair. This adaptability is undoubtedly one of their major strengths.

The combination of Mizuno Enerzy technology with the Wave plate offers a nice balance between comfort and responsiveness. Despite being highly cushioned, they still provide the propulsion you need with each stride.

1. The kilometres add up without significant difficulty, or at least, without causing pain or chafing.
2. The following day, you don't experience excessive stiffness or discomfort, which is crucial given the mechanical stress your body endures during long runs.

Similar to the previous model, I appreciate the outsole. Its excellent traction proves invaluable on rainy days or when pushing off during each stride. The redesigned sole feels more responsive, thanks to the unique flex groove.

I applaud Mizuno's efforts to design a lighter shoe, enhancing its versatility. Additionally, the Ultima 15 is slightly less cushioned than the 14 version, making it cooler overall while still maintaining a high level of comfort.

Possible points of improvement

Mizuno tends to stick to its iconic designs, which can be observed in their models, including the Ultima series. While I enjoy a bold design, I understand the appeal of a more neutral shoe, especially for urban settings.

Despite the improvements over the previous version, I question whether they justify the creation of a new model. Nonetheless, those who appreciated the Ultima 14 and seek a new pair will appreciate the subtle enhancements (thank you, Mizuno, for updating the laces!).

Conclusion

I'm delighted to have tested the new edition of a running shoe that I've grown fond of. I ran my first marathon in the Wave Ultima 14, and the Ultima 15 helped me set a new record in Paris. While I didn't race in them, they accompanied me throughout my training.

With many more miles ahead, I look forward to continuing my journey with them.
