Year 2022

We present the arrival on the market of the Salomon Speedcross 6, the latest update of one of the best-selling trail running shoes on the planet. A model that hadn't been updated for some time and whose essence will remain intact in this sixth edition: offering maximum cushioning and protection in medium distances and technical and muddy terrains. Suitable for a broad spectrum of runners, the main novelty of this model compared to its predecessors is a very significant reduction in weight.

With a retro aesthetic and 23 grams lighter, the Salomon Speedcross 6 trail running shoes burst onto the scene. A model aimed at conquering the most technical and demanding terrain, which moves with no issues through the muddiest terrain. Along with unbeatable grip and traction, there are major changes in key areas of the shoe such as the upper and outsole.

Main features of the Salomon Speedcross 6

The Salomon Speedcross 6 lands on the market with a radical change in one of the best-selling silhouettes, acclaimed by trail running enthusiasts. An update that has been a long time coming but that keeps its essence intact; offering excellent cushioning and protection in medium-distance runs over the roughest terrain. To this end, the Annecy-based company is committed to incorporating a top-level framework that we detail below.

While it is true that the geometry of the midsole in the heel has been maintained, it has been reconfigured in order to offer greater protection and support. A structure that also offers greater stability as the kilometres go by, together with excellent shock absorption during the race.

The upper has been redesigned to offer greater protection against external elements. Made of a very light and breathable mesh, it incorporates Salomon's quintessential lacing system: Quicklace. But these Speedcross 6 now sport a more retro aesthetic, more striking compared to their predecessor, the Speedcross 5.

The outsole has been completely redesigned. A third tip has now been added to these classic V-shaped lugs in the central area for multidirectional grip. It is important to note that this is a model specifically designed to offer an impeccable response in the most muddy and slippery terrain.

Salomon Speedcross 6: good things come to those who wait

Many athletes were waiting for the update of the Salomon Speedcross family. Well, company from Annecy surprises us with this latest edition of one of the best-selling trail running shoes on the market. This sixth iteration bursts on the scene with very significant developments in key sections of the shoe and with a lighter weight.

As far as technical specifications are concerned, we highlight a drop of 10 mm and a weight of 297 grams.

Salomon Speedcross 6, durable shoe that will delight trail runners on multiple terrains

In my beginnings in trail running, the first shoes I used were the Salomon Speedcroos 3. Salomon had been my first choice in trekking and when I took the step to run in the mountains I had no doubt in the brand of shoe I wanted to use. Besides, living in the North, and having mud in the mountains practically every season of the year, they were the ideal choice. These renewed Salomon Speedcross 6 are a mythical model that has been with us for a long time, before we could imagine that one day we could see our sport on a screen and improving the means for its broadcasting day by day.

For those of us who have had the opportunity to run with the third, fourth and fifth models of this legendary saga of the French brand, which means that the Salomon Speedcroos 6 needs no introduction, as it is true to its origins and remains one of the top selling trail running shoes worldwide, as it has been on the market for 16 years and still retains its essence.

Salomon running shoes

With these revamped Speedcross 6 from Salomon, my expectations have been exceeded once again, since, apart from maintaining a brutal grip, a sleeker and more comfortable upper has been added.

There is some more change from the previous model but the highlights are:

  • The multidirectional lugs in the central part of the sole.
  • A lower weight, 262 grams in the women's model and 298 grams in trail running shoes for men.
  • Lighter and more flexible upper that still maintains the Sensifit, the technology of Salomon models that provides a secure fit and works optimally.

What is the ideal trail runner profile of the Salomon Speedcross 6?

This is an ideal mountain running shoes for the average weight runner, although they are also a good option for those runners who go off the beaten track and run on muddy and/or technical trails.

This model is valid for all of us who like to get into the mud and get home as if you were coming from a battle.

The ideal distance to take advantage of this Salomon Speedcroos 6 is the middle distance, although as we said before, they are designed more for a specific type of terrain than for a specific distance. It can even be stretched over more kilometers, thanks to its comfort and can be used for distances up to marathon.

What we liked most about the Salomon Speedcross 6

I have no doubt about what I liked most about these Salomon shoes was their traction and grip on muddy and snowy terrain, and their good cushioning. Besides liking them more aesthetically, with a much more attractive design in my opinion.

They are very comfortable shoes with a spectacular foot support, they adapt to the foot from the first trip to the mountain and its response, in greasy terrain, is very good from the first day.

The strong points of this model are:

Grip

The 'contagrip' outsole is still used and the lugs in the central area have been updated. These typical 'V' shaped lugs have a third tip added in the central part which provides a multidirectional grip and, therefore, a more powerful grip. There is a large spacing between lugs to facilitate this great grip on soft terrain and a very rapid evacuation of mud.

Cushioning

The main material of the midsole, Energy Cell+, is maintained in this sixth edition, and is the one that gets that good cushioning to run with the confidence and security you need in each of your outdoor outings.

Comfort and support

This is achieved thanks to the new upper, which has been designed to prevent external elements from entering the interior. This extra flexibility is obtained because we have a super elastic layer under the QuickLace lacing system. A new upper that allows the forefoot to be libre, giving more comfort and the best response in the most technical and greasy terrains. The midsole, which we talked about in the previous point, also helps that comfort by supporting the rear part of the foot.

Opportunities for improvement in the Salomon Speedcross 6

As well as some strong points, we also have some opportunities for improvement and in this case it is in breathability and waterproofing:

  • Breathability: As well as in cold days it is very good, in hot days it can be very improvable.
  • Waterproofing: If it gets completely wet, the drainage is not very good and being the shoe a model that behaves optimally in wet terrain, it is a negative point, in my opinion.

Which are the direct rivals of the Salomon Speedcross 6?

The models to compare are its predecessor, the Salomon Speedcross 5, and the Nike Zoomx Zegama.

As for the improvement over the Salomon Speedcroos 5, apart from the aesthetics for my taste, is that it is a more stableshoe with even more cushioning if possible.

The Nike Zoomx Zegama is a shoe that still has a lot to improve in terms of outsole, compared to the Salomon Speedcroos 6, if you want to compete with it in wet terrain. Another point against is that it has less support in the collar area which greatly reduces the versatility, as it allows elements such as pebbles, sand, etc. to be introduced into the foot.

Final conclusion about the Salomon Speedcross 6

As a final conclusion I have to say that this is an indispensable shoe in the closet of any mountain runner. A model with brutal cushioning and grip for the most technical and greasy terrains. A durable shoe that will delight trail runners to jump, run, climb and enjoy the mountain.
