Year 2022

Salomon is in full reconversion, and good proof of this is the release of some of the most special and innovative trail running models. If in this 2022 it has been the turn of shoes like the Salomon S/Lab Genesis, 2023 will come with another bread under the arm thanks to the Salomon Thundercross.

The Salomon Thundercross will be a trail running shoes that will take time to arrive, but we will have at the end of 2023, facing the winter season next year. An aggressive yet technical model that will provide an efficient alternative for all those difficult outings on technical and even muddy terrain.

What are the expectations for the new Salomon Thundercross?

These Thundercross are a new trail running model from Salomon inspired by the models of the Speedcross line from the French company. With a similar philosophy to them, it is a model that will provide more cushioning and reactivity thanks to its Energy Foam midsole system. A compound that is becoming popular in the latest models of the house and that offers smoother and more fluid transitions.

It is a model very similar to, for example, the Salomon Speedcross 6, but, unlike these, discards the Energy Cell + midsole to offer that Energy foam mentioned above. In addition, we are talking about a model with a 4 mm drop, compared to the 10 mm drop of the Speedcross, and which will probably weigh less than 300 grams.

The aggressive outsole will maintain the idiosyncrasy of Salomon's Cross models, with a prominent and multidirectional tread pattern up to 5 millimeters thick. A model designed to offer the greatest of security and stability even in the most complicated workouts.

Salomon Thundercross Runner Profile

Knowing all these details and characteristics of the new Salomon training model, we can be sure that it will be a model oriented to medium weight runners. It is possible that runner profiles over 75 kilos can use them efficiently thanks to the improved midsole, but the aggressiveness and technicality of its structure will make them fit better with middle-weight runners used to technical terrains.

To summarize, we are talking about a very complete model for men and women, but somewhat more niche in terms of terrain and distances. Although it has features that will allow you to enjoy them for kilometers, its target distance will be short and intense technical outings. That is why its small drop of 4 millimeters, the TPU reinforcements throughout the shoe or its Quicklace system.

Salomon Thundercross: A trail shoe for everything

The Salomon Thundercross enters the trail running market as a promising hybrid between the popular Speedcross and Sense Ride. This blend suggests a shoe designed for adventure, combining durability and comfort in mountainous terrain.

First Impressions:

Taking the Salomon Thundercross out of the box, the first thing that jumps out at you is their rugged and attractive design. The initial feel is one of firmness, typical of Salomon shoes, which promises to fit the foot like a glove with use. Salomons signature Quicklace lacing system promises a quick and secure fit.

Salomon Thundercross features that I would highlight

  • Contagrip Outsole: Offers reliable traction on a variety of surfaces, from wet rocks to muddy trails.
  • Energy Foam Midsole: Provides balanced cushioning, absorbing shock without sacrificing responsiveness.
  • Protective mesh: A thin but durable layer in the forefoot to protect from rocks and mud.

My running experience

In action, the Thundercross feel nimble and secure. The traction of the Contagrip outsole comes through on technical terrain, providing confidence with every step. The midsole offers a balance between firmness and cushioning, resulting in a comfortable and dynamic running experience. The fit feels secure and precise, though it may require a little break-in period for those not used to Salomon.

What I liked most

Traction and stability: The grip on varied terrain is exceptional, providing security on ascents and descents.

Durability and ruggedness: These shoes are clearly built for endurance, ideal for runners who face tough conditions on a regular basis.

Sustained comfort: The combination of materials in the midsole ensures comfort during long runs, a crucial aspect for trail enthusiasts.

Possible areas for improvement

  • Tongue and fit: The tendency of the tongue to twist can be a point of discomfort on long runs.
  • Breathability: In warmer conditions, breathability could be improved, especially in the front of the shoe.

Conclusions

The Salomon Thundercross is an excellent choice for trail runners looking for a rugged, reliable and versatile shoe. Their performance on technical terrain and ability to handle a variety of conditions make them ideal for light to medium weight runners who enjoy medium to long distances. Although they have some areas of improvement, their overall balance of performance, comfort and durability make them a solid choice for trail enthusiasts.

Pros

  • Feeling of protection during the race
  • Perfect for running on smooth terrain, as well as for running on fatty or steep terrain.
  • Very good value for money

Cons

  • Weight may be a bit of a penalty for those looking for a shoe with a lot of protection.
